First birthday for Sixth Form Centre

One year on Interaction, the Bath based company responsible for re-designing and renovating King Edward’s Sixth Form Centre, paid students a visit to see how much they were enjoying their new Sixth Form environment.

Completed in August of 2008, the new sixth form centre at King Edward’s School in Bath has helped sixth form students to relax, study and socialise over the past twelve months in the run up to their all important exams.

Interaction were originally approached by students and staff who felt that the existing 6th form accommodation needed updating and redesigning to better meet their needs.

Responding to the suggestions from the students, Interaction came up with a design for a contemporary, functional Sixth Form Centre which would meet the varying needs of the students at King Edward’s School.

Interaction worked closely alongside the school to design and create an environment with a new lounge area, including leather seating and cafeteria, and even an ipod docking station. A modern IT study area was also created in the adjoining room.

Over the past twelve months the results have been clear to see, with record numbers of students utilising the facilities to their full potential.

Andrew Harvey, a Governor at King Edward’s School says the new sixth form centre is a real asset to the school, helping students to make the most of their free time, whether it’s for study or a well-earned break.

He said, “From initial talks through to the redesign of space and purchasing of equipment, the Interaction team were always on hand. Our sixth form centre is now able to offer students an up to date space, more in keeping with the rest of the school, where they can spend time studying as well relaxing and socialising.”

“Interaction has helped King Edward’s School to create an environment which encourages students to flourish. The new space has made such a difference to the school, allowing students to use the different areas more effectively for study, relaxing and socialising.”

Paul Haskins, Managing Director of Interaction believes the Sixth Form Centre renovation at King Edward’s School was an ideal project for the innovative company. He said, “This project allowed Interaction to do what we do best – design and create environments for people. From our brief it was clear that we needed to create somewhere that was functional, welcoming, up to date, but most importantly somewhere where the students would feel comfortable to relax and study in.”

“We’re delighted with the result, and are pleased to see that we have breathed new life into the Sixth Form Centre, and in turn we believe this will have lots of benefits for the students.”

Upper sixth form student Ellie Mulcrone has been able to enjoy the benefits of the new Sixth Form Centre throughout her first year of A-levels. She says that the new Sixth Form Centre has made a real difference to the students.

“Before it was quite basic,” she said, “but now there is a different atmosphere, there’s a real buzz. The space has been used to much better effect. The choice of furniture and the way the room is arranged makes it much more sociable and let’s the students interact easily with different groups.”

Team games help sixth form pupils get off to a good start

Pupils enjoyed an apprentice style team game as they started back in the sixth form after the summer holidays.

Pupils were divided into teams and given the task of coming up with a new design for a trainer which they then had to pitch in-front of the ‘dragons' and the rest of the teams. There were some very original designs and some very humorous presentations.

The Sixth Form apprentice game is just one of the many activities which pupils take part in throughout the school which helps them settle in and get to know everyone a little better.

Best A Level results ever plus GCSE results

King_Edward_s_School_A_Level_Results.jpg
Students at King Edward’s have once again performed exceptionally in their A-Levels this year, with a 100% pass rate.  91% of all entries were graded A or B, with the highest ever ‘A’ grade rate of 62%. These are outstanding results, which confirm King Edward’s School’s place as one of the leading co-educational independent schools in the country.

One in three students achieved A grades in all their subjects, with 12 candidates achieving 4 grade As and 2 candidates, Joe O’Hara and Henry Irish, gaining the top grade in 5 A-Levels!  Most students have again gained entry into the top universities, with a significant number gaining entry into Oxford or Cambridge.

King Edward’s School is delighted to be celebrating its second best ever set of GCSE results with 74% of entries graded A* or A.  Over a third of pupils gained nothing less than an A grade in all of their subjects.  Five pupils recorded the outstanding achievement of a clean sweep of 10 A* grades.

Congratulations are due to all students, who have worked extremely hard for their success and of whom the School is very proud.

Sixth Form

Entering the Sixth Form is an important time for all pupils. King Edward's School offers excellent academic success, a broad range of extra curricular activities and a supportive and caring teaching staff who help and encourage pupils towards achieving their future goals.

One of the strengths of King Edward's School is its excellent track record of academic success. The quality of teaching is exceptional and is designed to enable all pupils to discover their strengths and make the most of their talents.

King Edward's School recognises that pupils need advice and guidance with their university applications. There is a pro-active programme of careers counselling, external conferences, speakers from business and an extensive careers and higher education library to help students make informed choices about their future direction.

The atmosphere of the Sixth form is very special. Pupils who join from other schools are made to feel very welcome with a helpful induction to Sixth form life at the beginning. There is also a designated Sixth Form area where all Sixth form pupils can get to know each other in a supportive and social environment.

At King Edward's School we believe we should prepare students for their lives after School in the broadest sense. By the time students leave our Upper Sixth Form we expect that they will have acquired more than academic knowledge; they should have developed an ability to study independently, as well as social, personal and time management skills to see them through higher education and, for many, demanding careers.

Pupils in the Sixth Form are encouraged to show leadership within the School by being responsible for and supporting younger members of the School. There are opportunities for making a contribution to the wider community also by taking part in community service activities each week. Many pupils visit hospitals, care homes and charities in and around Bath, as well as being enjoyable pupils find it develops their self-confidence and they make great friendships too.
