B&NES Cross Country Championships

King Edward’s pupils did extremely well at the Bath and North East Somerset Cross Country Championships during November. Seventeen pupils achieved places in the Top 10 and went on to represent B&NES at the Avon Schools’ Cross Country Championships in January at Blaise Castle in Bristol.

In the Minors group (Year 7) the boys’ team consisting of 6 runners came first with Nic McKibbin (2nd), Jacob Fox (4th), Felix Pivcevic (5th), and Joe Jones (10th). The girls’ team finishing third, Elen Lindsay (8th) was the first KES pupil home. In the Junior group (Year 8 & 9) Year 9s were unavailable, which resulted in the Juniors group being represented by Year 8s only. This didn’t hinder them at all, the girls’ team coming second with an outstanding first place by Susie Barnes (Year 8). For the boys, George Chapman (4th) also gave a great performance against boys a year older.

In the Inter group (Year 10 & 11) the girls’ team came second and the boys’ team took third place. Alex Hill (Year 11) won the boys race by some 600 metres. In the Senior group (Year 12 & 13) Marcie Bower took first place for the girls and Mark Warren (Year 12) took second for the boys. Conor Stiles, Jake Oldaker, Alex Phillips, Mark Humpheys and James Plumstead all securing top ten finishes in their respective races.

U14 National Schools Netball Regional Round 20th Jan

The U14s were both excited and nervous attending the Regional finals this year. They were faced with a tough pool and knew they needed to play their best netball, in order to reach the semi-finals.

Their match results were as follows:

V Haygrove School –Won 10-2

V Truro High School –Won 6-4

V Canford School –Won 9-5

V Chosen Hill –Won 11-6

V Godolphin -9-9

V West Buckland –Won 8-5

Godolphin proved to be their toughest game, but they ended up coming second to KES, who won their pool on goal difference. This meant that they were playing the second placed team in the other pool, which was Dean Close.

The girls had a great start and were 5-3 up at half-time. With 1 minute to go the score was 7-7 and KES were battling with their nerves. Dean Close scored with 20 seconds to go and the girls knew their tournament was over.

Although disappointed to be so close to reaching the National finals and missing out, the girls’ played some excellent netball and should be proud of their development over the season.

Congratulations to all members of the U14 squad, including captain Molly Buxton, Katie Kohn, Eli Milner, Flossie Thomas, Katie Solleveld, Poppy Kevelighan, Katie Austin, Bea Johnson, Amelia Crowther and Katy Maguire.

Thanks to Mrs. Crouch for all of her hard work with the squad.
