Junior School Children from Years 4-6 were thrilled to perform in Bath Abbey on Friday, as part of the Friday Afternoons initiative - an international music project encouraging young people to sing.

Working with Shean Bowers, Bath Abbey’s Assistant Director of Music and Choral Director for School, the children have been rehearsing since January.  The pieces performed during the concert included Benjamin Britten’s aptly named ‘Friday Afternoons’ and music by Jonathan Dove. The concert also featured chorus singing, solo songs as well as music sung by the Junior School Tudor Rose Choir.

The Friday Afternoons initiative began in 2013 as part of the celebrations for Benjamin Britten’s centenary. What was initially just a local Suffolk project became regional, then national, then global in scope, with young people around the world now involved and taking part in Friday afternoon concerts.

Commenting on the concert and the Junior School’s performance, Mrs Hutchings, Director of Music at the Junior School, said: “We have enjoyed performing as part of the Bath Abbey Singing Programme with other schools and this is the first time that the Junior School has had its own, standalone concert at Bath Abbey. It’s been an exciting opportunity - especially as this celebration of music and singing is so very inclusive and involved all of Years 4-6. We hope it installs a love of singing in our pupils and inspires them to join one of our school’s 3 choirs!”
