Congratulations to King Edward’s British Schools’ Biathlon competitors

Twelve pupils at King Edward’s Senior and Junior School were delighted to be selected for the first of four Schools’ Biathlon Championship Semi Finals which took place at Bath University on Sunday 22^nd January.

Selection was tough. Schools were asked to submit run and swim times and only the top 50 out of a total 6,000 entries were invited to compete in each class.

The event saw pupils from Years 5 to 7 tackling a 50m swim and 500m run, while Years 8 to Year 13 pupils had to complete a 100m swim and 1000m run for Years 8 to 12/13. Points are awarded for each discipline and final positions are decided by the total number of points achieved after both disciplines. There was also a team element to the competition as the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will count as a team.

Helen Earle, King Edward’s School Sports Department, commented: “Well done to all pupils who took part in the Schools’ Biathlon Championship. They showed great commitment and worked incredibly hard with their training and gained a great deal from the experience and deserve credit for their achievement.”

Dulcie Walpole is waiting for the results of the other two Semi Finals to see whether she has got through to the Finals at Crystal Palace.

King Edward’s Junior School pupils visit Jamie’s Farm

Children from King Edward’s Junior School were delighted to visit Jamie’s Farm on Thursday 2^nd February to find out how the new cows they raised money to buy were getting on.

In October 2010 pupils had a competition to name two new cows at Jamie’s Farm which they called Sizzlewink and Marzipan. They raised over £1,200 which went towards the purchase of three Jersey calves.

The children’s visit was a great opportunity to learn about the daily tasks that take place on a farm. Pupils helped with feeding the calves, pigs and chickens, rounding up the sheep and seeing a shoe being fitted by the Farrier on one of the horses.

Jamie’s Farm is a local charity which helps children and teenagers who are at risk from social exclusion. Vulnerable young people spend time on the farm experiencing a positive family environment. Their confidence and self esteem are helped through praise and opportunities for experiencing success through their work on the farm.

King Edward's Junior School experience a Victorian lesson

Year 6 enjoyed a taste of what life would have been like for pupils in a Victorian lesson on Monday 30th January.

They learnt about the use of corporal punishment, the cane, and how children who couldn't answer a question would have to go stand in the corner and wear the dunce's hat.

Although everyone enjoyed the Victorian experience, they were very pleased that lessons went back to normal in the afternoon.

King Edward’s Junior School artwork to be displayed in the National Gallery

Two giant batiks, made by Year 4 pupils during the Summer Term 2011, have been selected by the National Gallery to be on display as part of the Take One Picture exhibition.

The two pictures will be on show from 9th May to 16th September at the National Gallery, London.

Every year the National Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms.

The painting Year 4 looked at was Veronese's The Family of Darius before Alexander, which inspired a history-linked batik by 4R, Guthrum before Alfred the Great, and an English-linked one by 4M Titania and the Fairies before Oberon.

All the batiks feature self-portraits by the children as various characters.

Head Teacher, Mr Greg Taylor, commented:

“Many congratulations to the pupils for their creativity and artistry. This is a tremendous accolade to have both pieces of artwork on display at the National Gallery in London. We are extremely proud of their achievement and hope that it will encourage them to continue developing their skills as artists.

In recognition of the pupil’s achievement Mr Roberts-Wray and Mrs MacFarlan are planning to take the children involved to see their artwork on display at the National Gallery during the Summer Term.”

The batiks are currently on display in the Brenda Medlock Technology Centre at the Junior School until the end of the January.

Junior School pupils enjoy Diwali Workshop

Pupils from Year 5 enjoyed a Diwali workshop. They made sweets and salt dough divas, performed stick dancing and tried on traditional Diwali costumes.

Many thanks to Mrs Mahmood who kindly helped, Year 5 pupils and teachers, to create such an enjoyable Diwali workshop.

Year 5 Trip to Explore @ Bristol

On 16 January, Year 5 children were taken to Explore @ Bristol - an innovative science building with specialist exhibitions.

They attended an 'Earth in Space' workshop where they found out how the movements of the earth related to day and night and the seasons with a Magic Globe and 3D animations.

They also visited the on-site planetarium to experience hands-on science activities and to further their understanding of the nature of the Solar System.

A good time was had by all!

Year 6 enjoy a morning perfecting their hockey and rugby skills at King Edward’s Senior School

Year 6 pupils from King Edward’s Junior School enjoyed a morning with King Edward’s Senior Coaching Staff and Elite players on Friday 2^nd December working on their hockey and rugby skills.

The aim of the Skills Session was for pupils to experience games at the Senior School, get to know King Edward’s Senior School’s coaching staff and improve their skills and understanding of the game.

An added treat for the girls was to work alongside Elite player Zoe Shipperly, England Hockey.

Speaking about the morning, Head of Girls’ Games, Liz Young said,

“The Hockey and Rugby Skills Day was a superb opportunity for pupils to develop their skills. It was also designed to be great fun. The coaches enjoy passing on their skills and their enthusiasm for the sport and it was a pleasure to watch the children both improve their skills and gain in confidence as the morning progressed.”

Talented Year 6 girl at King Edward’s Junior School wins place in the National Children’s Orchestra

Emma Jones, Year 6 at King Edward’s Junior School, gave a five star performance on the cello to win a place in the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO).

Gaining a place in the NCO, Great Britain’s premier symphony orchestra for young children, means Emma will have the opportunity to train with top professional musicians at a residential training course early next year.

Mary Edward’s, Director of Music at King Edward’s Junior School, said:

“This is a great achievement for Emma. She has been chosen from hundreds of young musicians from across the country and the standard of competition was extremely high. Her success is a testament to her hard work and dedication as well as the dedicated specialist instrumental teaching that takes place in the Junior School. This is a wonderful opportunity for Emma to build her musical skills. Many congratulations from everyone at King Edward’s Junior School we wish you every success.”

Music, both as part of the curriculum and as an extra-curricular activity, is such an important part of life at King Edward’s Junior School and our approach is reflected in the success of our pupils gaining places in the National Children’s Orchestra.

King Edward’s School was delighted to welcome Ms Emily Liu and Ms Farah Yin to our School.

Emily is a Secondary Teacher of English at the independent Suzhou Foreign Language School and is in the UK to study English teaching methods and the UK education system. Emily will be spending time at the Senior School.

Farah is a primary school English teacher and will be spending time at both the Pre-Prep and Junior School.

Both teachers are enjoying a 10 week sabbatical sponsored by the Bath Suzhou Educational Partnership.

King Edward’s Senior and Junior School Young Musicians both perform at Rotary Music Gala

King Edward’s Junior School Brass ensemble and the Senior School KES Steel Pan Ensemble both performed at the annual Rotary Gala Concert in aid of the ‘Friends of Young Carers’ on Saturday 12 November at St Swithin’s Church, Bath.

The Junior School Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Jon Griffin, the brass specialist teacher at King Edward’s, opened the concert with a set of pieces that showed off the young players’ performance technique and ability to entertain a very appreciative audience.

The first half closed with KES STEEL, the Steel Pan Ensemble made up of the best players from Years 7 & 8, who, judging by the applause and cheers from the delighted audience, could have played more!

Mary Edwards, Director of Music at King Edward’s Junior School and the Musical Director of King Edward’s KES STEEL commented:-

‘It is very fitting that young musicians from King Edward’s give of their time and talents to support a charity that aims to help improve the quality of young children between the ages of 5 to18 who have caring responsibilities in their own home, caring for a parent or sibling who are either disabled or ill. The concert raised £3,000 to donate to the charity and I am proud of both the Junior School Brass Ensemble under Mr Griffin’s direction, and KES STEEL, whose performances were of the very highest musical quality.’

Children in Need Apprentice Style at King Edward’s Junior School

Imogen Smith from Year 4 at King Edward’s Junior School wanted to help raise money for Children in Need so she asked her form and they all agreed to help.

Taking inspiration from the BBC TV Programme The Apprentice, Imogen Smith and her friends set about marketing the event to the rest of the Junior School with posters and notices in assembly. Soon Year 4 had organised volunteers to bake the cakes, lay them out attractively for sale, agreed a pricing strategy and practised their sales banter. Everything was ready for morning break on Friday 18^th November when the Cake Sale took place.

The event was a great success with floods of children arriving to buy the cakes. Year 4 raised £215 for Children in Need.

Year 4 use animation to investigate the water cycle

Lessons came to life for Year 4 when they used animation techniques to study the water cycle.

Year 4 Teacher, Mrs Liz Macfarlan said: “All the Year 4 classes have been using animation techniques to really understand the water cycle process. It’s lots of fun and demands a high level of teamwork and co-operation. We plan to animate the formation and movement of a waterfall next.”

Year 4 enjoy a Geography Field Trip to Wellow Brook

Year 4 took part in a field trip during September to measure and record aspects of Wellow Brook, as part of the Year 4 geography topic on rivers.

Pupils got their wellington boots on to take samples from the river bed, and to investigate invertebrates in the river. They also used apples to follow the way the current changes in a meander.

The trip allowed pupils to identify the main features of a river, and gave them a common point of reference to relate to in the classroom.

King Edward’s Junior School seeks help tracing former pupils to invite to the Grand Opening of the new Brenda Medlock Technology Centre

King Edward’s Junior School has recently completed the building of the Brenda Medlock Technology Centre and would like help tracing former pupils and members of staff to invite to the Grand Opening of the centre which is planned for Saturday 15^th October.

The Grand Opening co-insides with King Edward’s Junior School’s 21^st birthday. It is twenty one years since the School first moved into its present position on the North Road site in 1990. Celebrations for both the Grand Opening and the 21^st Birthday are planned between 10.30 – 12.30pm on Saturday 15th October.

The Brenda Medlock Technology centre represents a £1 million investment in a quality learning environment at King Edward’s Junior School. The new development incorporates new Design and Technology and Information technology suites, two new classrooms and an Art room refurbished with the latest arts equipment. The new DT room will be equipped with ovens for cookery activities and the ICT room will be equipped with state-of-the-art computer hardware to take computer-based learning to the next level across the curriculum. One of the new classrooms will be designed as a drama and philiosophy space. This will allow the Junior School to extend its speech and drama teaching and to further develop Philosophy for children sessions.

Castle Combe Cycle Event and BBQ

Families from King Edward’s Junior School enjoyed a sponsored cycle at Castle Combe Circuit on Sunday 11^th September in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

Each lap is 1.85 miles and the challenge was to complete as many laps as possible in an hour.

Spanish Theatre company visit King Edward’s School

Pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7 who study Spanish at King Edward’s School were delighted to have the opportunity on Friday 13^th May to enjoy the Onatti Theatre Company’s production of ¿Hablas español?

The play was aimed at beginners and performed by a very experienced Spanish Theatre company who include lots of physical clues and ensure that they speak both slowly and clearly with lots of repetition to make sure pupils can follow the story.

The plot is about a boy called Kirk who visits Spain for the first time on a school trip but ends up in a Spanish hospital. Despite his limited Spanish he manages to communicate to an officious nurse and a Spanish girl who befriends him. The adventure makes Kirk realise how well he has coped and he finds he has a new enthusiasm for Spanish.

Pupils from the Junior School were delighted to meet the cast members at the end of the play.
