King Edward's School BATH

A Hilarious and heartbreaking tale of talent shows, strikes, racism, broken homes and big dreams. ‘POP! is Billy Elliot meets The X Factor via Shameless’.

You are invited to attend the premier of a brand new musical - POP! - a unique and exciting new project written and developed exclusively for – and in collaboration with – the pupils of King Edward’s School, Bath.

Critically acclaimed teen and YA novelist Catherine Bruton, (described by The Guardian as ‘one of the finest teen writers of recent years’) works part-time as an English teacher at King Edward’s School, Bath. Her first YA novel We Can be Heroes was recently adapted into a film starring Alison Steadman and Phil Davies (‘an important film for the UK in 2017 …  it made this reviewer laugh aloud and cry, sometimes simultaneously! Five Stars!’- The Edinburgh Reporter) With the help of pupils in the Drama department, Catherine has adapted her 2011 novel POP! to create a fresh and contemporary musical that is hilarious and heartbreaking, topical, funny, fast-paced and perfect to show-case the talents of the school’s young performers.

Music and lyrics have been developed by King Edward’s Resident Composer and Music teacher, Mark Boden (‘One of Wales’ most exciting emerging new talents’ - Music Theatre Wales). Mark’s work has been performed by ensembles including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and broadcast on Radio 3. Mark has worked in collaboration with music students to develop an exciting and highly contemporary score, which includes numbers written by emerging young song-writers within the school.

This exciting new production is being brought to the stage by King Edward’s School Drama and Music Departments, the same talented creative team that recently produced sell-out productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Beauty and the Beast. In keeping with the inclusive ethos of the performing arts within the school, pupils aged 14 – 18 will be involved in all stages of the production process –  lighting, sound, set and costume design, orchestra and performance.

Set against a backdrop of strikes, racism and recession, POP! follows the stories of three kids who dream of a better life for themselves and their families. They secretly enter a TV talent show (think The X Factor meets Britain’s Got Talent!). Of course, their families will kill them if they find out, and they’re going to have to be creative with the truth  if they want to make it all the way – but when they scoop the Big Cash prize money, all will be forgiven! Won’t it?

This is an exciting and unique collaboration – a musical written for and with young people who have been involved in every aspect of the production, from song-writing, through to the final staging and performance. A big, brave, bold, brilliant piece of work, POP! will make you laugh and make you cry - and leave you fizzing with toe-tapping tunes and sure-fire musical hits.
