Children at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery enjoyed a special Assembly and creative activities to celebrate Chinese New Year.

At lunchtime, School Cook, Mrs Mortimer created a wonderful Chinese feast which the children ate using wooden chopsticks kindly donated by the Wagamama restaurant.

King Edward's Pre-Prep look after two guinea pigs

King Edward’s Pre-Prep have been joined by two temporary members, Bolt and Boris, a couple of very friendly guinea pigs.

The guinea pigs will stay at the Pre-Prep until the start of the Easter holidays. Each class will have the responsibility of caring for them for a week. Reception have been busy this week feeding them, and ensuring they have a chance to run around on the grass outside when the sun is shining.

Next week the guinea pigs will be looked after by Year 1.

Thank you to Mrs Ansari and Adam who have kindly allowed their guinea pigs to be looked after by the School.

Reception Assembly on All creatures great and small

Reception presented a lovely Assembly about All creatures great and small on Friday 27^th January.

The children acted out the story of Farmer Duck and recited a poem in French.

Year 1 goes on a Winter Walk

Year 1 enjoyed a Winter walk in Royal Victoria Park on Tuesday 17^th January. The children were able to spot several differences in the park since their last walk in the Summer. The pond was frozen, and despite being well wrapped up, the children also felt their toes go very cold.

Poetry Assembly for Year 1

In Year 1’s Assembly on Friday 20^th January the children recited some lovely poems they had created themselves and displayed some creative pictures of a winter scene using different art techniques.

Year 2 use scooters to learn about forces

Pupils from Year 2 really enjoyed their science lesson on forces. They brought their scooters into school so they could use them in a practical experiment to understand how forces can be used to speed things up, slow things down and change direction.

Year 1 enjoyed a talk by Mr Wigfield about his trip to the Artic.

The children enjoyed seeing photographs of all the animals he saw on his trip and they also had the opportunity to look at the special equipment he took with him to help him in the extremely low temperatures of the artic.

Year 2 meet a Dalek

There was great excitement for everyone in Year 2 when the children got to meet a Dalek.

The Dalek had come to help Dr Who assist a stranded alien get back to its own planet. The alien had crash landed at the School and was having trouble getting back home.

The visit by the Dalek was a complete surprise and the children were completely thrilled to have the opportunity of asking the Dalek lots of questions.

As part of their topic on Aliens, the Year 2 children will be writing a letter to the Alien to find out if it got home safely and to find out more about its planet.

King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School have the ‘Ah’ Factor

From the 1^st Innkeeper and his wife to the camel, mice and soldiers, I think every child will remember their role in this year’s Christmas production of Jesus’ Birthday. The Christmas nativity has become a much loved tradition at the Pre-Prep.

Over a hundred visitors filled our hall to watch the entire school perform with such joy and enthusiasm for both performances.

Ms Gilbert would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Alexander-Jupp for adapting the script and directing the play, to Mrs Bishop who co-ordinated the wonderful scenery, to our Nursery parents who made the costumes, to Mrs Edwards, our pianist and to Sam Rendell our lighting technician and to all the staff at the Pre-Prep who have worked tirelessly putting this performance together with the children.

The perfect Christmas tree for King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School

There was great excitement on Thursday 24^th November when a group of children from the Pre-Prep travelled to Swainswick on the school minibus to select two Christmas trees for the school.

Everyone at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School would like to thank Mr Eades from Eades Greengrocers, who kindly gives up his time every year to take the Pre-Prep children to hunt for the perfect Christmas tree at his market garden on the slopes above Bath.

King Edward’s Pre-Prep learn about Thanksgiving

Children at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School enjoyed a talk by Mrs Claydon about Thanksgiving Day in America.

The children learnt that it is a time to offer thanks, for family gatherings and holiday meals. Thanksgiving is a time of turkeys, stuffing, pumpkin pie, Indian corn, holiday parades and giant balloons.

Everyone thought about the things in their lives they were grateful for.

King Edward’s Pre-Prep School learn about Diwali

Children at King Edward’s Pre-Prep enjoyed learning about Diwali celebrations with their special visitors Mr and Mrs Gadher.

Diwali is one of the best known of the Hindu festivals. The name Diwali means ‘row of lighted lamps’ which comes from the tradition for houses, shops and public places to be decorated with small oil lamps called divas.

Diwali is the start of the new business year and people say prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, for a successful year.

The festival is a time for spring-cleaning the home, exchanging gifts and decorating buildings with lights. Hindus leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in. Patterns known as rangoli are drawn on the floor.

At the Pre-Prep the children enjoyed workshops with Mr and Mrs Gadher creating some Rangoli patterns, cooking Indian bread, drumming and dressing up in some beautiful Indian costumes.

Big Ted helps King Edward's Pre-Prep and Nursery School raise money for the RUH Appeal

Congratulations to everyone at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery who raised £100.17 for the Royal United Hospital Gamma CT Scanner Appeal on Friday 14^th October.

Children paid £1 to bring their teddy bears into school dressed in some very colourful flower power outfits and they also brought in some coins which were used to create the pattern of a flower in the playground.

The surprise of the day was a visit from the RUH’s Big Ted who visited the school to thank the children for their kindness in raising money for the Appeal.

The children learnt that the money they had raised will go towards a Gamma CT Scanner, a high tech piece of equipment that is used to diagnose some of the many different types of cancer that affect everyone.

Baby and Toddler Show prize winners Liz and daughter Hannah collect their digital camcorder

Liz and daughter Hannah from Chippenham were the winners of King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School prize draw at the recent Baby and Toddler Show.

Liz was delighted to win a digital camcorder which she is excited about using over the weekend when her family plan to visit Peppa Pig World to celebrate their daughter‘s birthday.

King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery were one of many early years’ childcare and activity providers who attended the Baby and Toddler Show at Bath Pavilion.

The event provided a great opportunity for child orientated organisations to meet and talk to parents about their services.

King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School Head Teacher, Ms Jayne Gilbert, commented:

“The Parent and Toddler Show event was the perfect opportunity for us to show case the breadth of wonderful experiences the children in our Nursery enjoy each week including music, dance and gym with specialist teachers and outdoor forest school learning.”

Parents at the show especially appreciated the King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School stand which included an interactive play area for young children.

Early morning exercise helps children at the Pre-Prep stay healthy and full of energy

Pupils at King Edward’s Pre-Prep have started the term with a new initiative called ‘Waking and Shaking’. Every morning at 8:50am before class begins the children and staff start the day exercising.

The purpose of ‘Waking and Shaking’ is to rejuvenate the mind, help everyone fully wake up and fill their lungs with clean air, have lots of fun and physical exercise before beginning to learn.

Miss Watson, a reception teacher at King Edward’s Pre-Prep together with Brendan Rouse, School Sports Coordinator from BANES have been training staff and working with the children to implement this new idea.

Jayne Gilbert, Head of King Edward’s Pre-Prep, commented:

“It has been lovely to see the children taking part in action songs such as YMCA and the Locomotion.

A big thank you to Miss Watson and Brendan Rouse, School Sports Coordinator from BANES, who have helped us develop this new initiative. It was been great to see all the pupils and staff, and some parents as well, joining in.”

King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery plan an action packed Book Week

King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery have planned a week of book related activities between 26^th to the 29^th September to celebrate National Book Week.

Children’s author visit
Events start on Monday 26^th September at 1.30pm with a visit from children’s author Tracy Corderoy who will be visiting the Nursery and Reception class. Tracy will be working closely with the children to create their own stories.

Bread making cookery workshop
On Tuesday 27^th September the theme for the day takes inspiration from the children’s classic story The Little Red Hen. The story is about a little red hen who runs around all day trying to get help from the other animals to help her make some bread. French chef and baker, Mr Richard Bertinet, from The Bertinet Kitchen and King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery’s very own Masterchef, Mrs Mortimer, will be running a cookery workshop to help the children make their own bread. The children will experience the enjoyment of making bread dough, watching it rise and then baking the bread. The children will enjoy eating their bread on Thursday 29^th September at their own special Harvest celebration.

Book fair
Starting on Tuesday 27^th September through to Tuesday 4^th October there will be a before and after school Book Fair. Books will be on sale every morning from 8.30 – 8.50am and then again after school between 3.30 – 4.00pm.

Sharing favourite stories
On Wednesday 28^th September parents and grandparents will be dropping into school from 2.45pm onwards to read their favourite children’s stories with the class.

Children’s illustrator visits
On Thursday 29^th September illustrator Owen Davey will join Year 1 and Year 2 from 1.30pm to talk about the role of an illustrator. He will give the children some help creating their own illustrations.

Harvest Festival celebrations
Children will be combining books with songs and dance from each year group to celebrate Harvest Festival on Thursday 29^th September. Harvest Festival will be followed by a special harvest lunch where the children will be eating the bread they made themselves along with a delicious ploughman’s style lunch and homemade soup.

Design a book cover competition
All week there will be a competition running to design a book cover for the Little Red Hen children’s story classic.

Talking about Book Week, Head Ms Jayne Gilbert, said “Book Week is a wonderful way to encourage both a love of writing and reading. Throughout the week there will be many activities which are designed to encourage children to enjoy their books. There will be visits from a children’s author, an illustrator and a Chef who has written his own cookery book. The children will learn lots about how to write and illustrate their own books.”

Ballooning around the World Summer Concert

Children at King Edward’s Pre-Prep enjoyed an early holiday visiting other countries around the world in their Summer production called ‘Ballooning around the World’.

The whole school took part in a musical production which told the story of a group of children travelling in a balloon to other countries around the world to find out about their food and culture. The children sample the food in the different countries and try to decide which country has the food of their dreams.

Princesses and Knights Family Fun Day a big success

King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery hosted a Princesses and Knights Family Fun Day on Saturday 21^st May, 2011.

The event, inspired by the theme of Princesses and Knights, was a great success with many families from King Edward’s Pre-Prep and the local community enjoying a morning of fun games and activities. It was lovely to see so many children come dressed as princesses and knights. Children enjoyed making their own Knights’ shields, having their faces painted like a princess and creating their own ornate designs using icing on biscuits – food fit for a royal banquet.

The gardens of the Pre-Prep were a perfect backdrop for the event, plenty of space for children to play, explore the wooden castle and ship, the sensory garden and have a family picnic on the lawn. King Edward’s Pre-Prep would like to say a big thank you to the many activity and craft stalls who supported the day. All money raised will go towards books for the library and to aid the emergency relief efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Japan.

Green Britain Day Wed 18 May

King Edward’s School celebrated Green Britain Day on 18 May, 2011 by sharing 5 ideas on how to become a greener School.

Here are 5 simple ideas which most Schools could use towards being greener:-

Grow green
King Edward’s catering department use locally sourced food, wherever possible, to prepare dishes for lunch. To reduce the amount of meat consumed each week pupils voted to have one day a week meat free. ‘Vegetarian Tuesday’ now gives a choice of two vegetarian dishes, a choice of mixed salads or sandwiches.

Learning about where food comes from starts young at King Edward’s. Children at the Pre-Prep children grow vegetables in their own garden which are then used by the cook for lunch. At the Junior School pupils can join Gardening club and learn more about growing and looking after plants. The attractive planters outside the school entrance are all the work of the Junior School Garden Club members. At the Senior School a School orchard has been created and there are plans being drawn up for greening other areas around the School.

Create a garden
A member of staff, Steve Haan, has transformed a courtyard into a haven of green tranquillity with plants and containers donated by members of staff. It is a beautiful tiny garden which shows how easy it is to achieve a green space with a little bit of imagination.

Recycling
Recycling is now part of the School routine. King Edward’s not only recycles cardboard and paper but there is a box for compostable food waste in the dining hall, which gets added to the compost bin after lunch each day. Sharing is another great way to go green. When staff have finished reading a book they can add it to the Book swap box in return for another.

Travel
Pupils and staff are encouraged to travel to and from School by bike, public transport or on foot where possible. A Travel Guide contains details of all the local bus and trains from Bath and the surrounding area which pupils can use to plan their journey to School. There are spaces for bicycles on site and the Cycle to Work Scheme has been adopted to encourage staff to cycle. Children at the Junior School are encouraged to improve their cycling skills and learn how to use the roads safely by taking the Bikeability course which runs each year for Year 6.

Personal action
To be truly green everyone needs to do their bit. The Eco Schools team have been instrumental in encouraging the School community to go green through personal action. Signs, posters, assemblies and emails have all been used to spread the green message. Pupils and staff are actively encouraged to turn off computers and lights when they are not being used.
