KES Cricket Week

KES played their annual cricket week in fantastic weather, recording 3 victories out of 4, only losing to the Old Edwardians.

The highlight of Cricket Week was a memorable 8 wicket victory against the MCC. A weakened KES bowling line up saw MCC score 300-4 at more than a run a ball, however, a school record unbeaten 238 run partnership won the match for KES.

The match winners were Captain Will Collier who scored his maiden century in all forms of cricket (104* off 89 balls) and Sam Mount who scored his third consecutive hundred (124* off 131 balls). Their match winning partnership came from only 214 balls.

There were also wins against Yarra Valley from Melbourne Australia, and the XL 40 Club. Yarra Valley scored 201 all out, with the wickets shared around but opening batsman Olly Metcalfe (83 not out) saw KES home by 5 wickets.

In a similar game, XL 40 Club scored 211 all out and again Metcalfe was the star scoring his maiden century sharing a partnership of 139 with Will Collier (68 not out) to win the match by 8 wickets. Metcalfe finished on 108 not out.

Cricket Week finishes off another successful season for KES senior cricket, unbeaten in T20 cricket in Bath for the third year running. Sam Mount scored 663 runs at an average of 74 and topped the bowling with 18 wickets at 19. Captain Will Collier finished off his school career scoring his 1000^th run for the first team.

England Hockey select KES student

King Edward’s School student Eugene Malthouse has been selected to represent the England U18 hockey squad.

Malthouse, who was captain of KES 1^st XI hockey team this season and a member of Bath Buccs 1^st Xi National League side, will join the England squad on Wednesday to play a three test match series in Germany this weekend. On returning from Germany the KES superstar is then scheduled to travel to Ireland to play in the Home Nations Tournament later this month.

Malthouse, who will earn his 1^st international cap this weekend, will also play a key role in England’s short corner attack as their number one drag flick specialist.

Louisa Gwilliam, Director of Sport at King Edward’s School, commented that “Eugene Malthouse is first KES student to play hockey for England and his selection is just reward for all of his hard work and effort over recent years. He is a credit to the school and we wish him every success this summer.”

Pretty in pink Race for Life

Pupils, staff and mums from King Edward’s dressed in pink and ran, jogged or walked in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The Race for Life took place on Sunday 6^th June on a 5km track around the University of Bath. Over 3,000 people took part in the event, with over fifty girls from KES, including KES mum Angela Mount, whose battle with the disease has inspired her to set up her own charity Rose for Life. Angela took part with her six-year-old daughter Ellie from the Pre-Prep.

There were two races, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Over 30 year pupils from the Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior School, along with parents, friends and teachers ran, jogged or walked the course in the afternoon, and 4 members of the KES community finished in the top four places, amazing effort everyone, well done!

The Race for Life is a really unique event because it is the largest all-female fundraising event in the UK. Many of the participants have either battled cancer themselves or know somebody who has.

Wendy Bedeman, Sixth Form tutor from King Edward’s Senior School, who went with a group of girls from the sixth form, commented:

“The atmosphere was fantastic, everyone came dressed up and it was such good fun. You don’t have to race if you don’t want to, you can walk or jog, so you don’t have to worry about training for the event. It’s a good feeling to help other people and to collect funds for Cancer Research.”

50th Anniversary of Ten Tors

The weather on Dartmoor ensured that the 50^th anniversary Ten Tors Expedition was every bit as tough as the previous 49. The Saturday morning dawned grey and cold, with a strong northerly wind and rain and fog covering the moors as the teams set off from Okehampton on their expeditions. Though the cloud lifted a little, the biting cold wind and rain continued all day, making it a tough day to be out on the hills. After a night out on the moor, teams made their way to the finish. Though still cold, at least now they could see where they were going!

King Edward’s School teams took part at all three distances.

The 45 mile team walked for 13½ hours non-stop on Day 1, going through their 8^th tor a few minutes before it closed at 8:00pm, and continuing on through the dark to their 9^th tor. They set off walking at 6 o’clock on Sunday morning and were one of the first two teams to cross the finishing line at 7:34. Though Ten Tors is not a race, this is one of the fastest completions of the 45 mile expedition ever, and is a testimony to the fitness of the whole team, and their first-rate navigation skills.

The 35 mile team also had a long day. They navigated their way confidently around a long, tough route on the northern part of the moor to reach their 8^th tor where they had to camp. They set off walking again at 6 o’clock, and were the first team to complete their route.

To complete any of these expeditions requires great determination, but the hardest of the lot must be the 55 mile route. The KES team on this year’s 55 mile route was one of the fittest and most experienced the school has ever put in. They walked well to complete the first third of their route by early afternoon on Saturday, when one member of the team was forced to retire from the expedition due to hypothermia. After being delayed by over an hour, the remaining 5 members of the team continued on to reach the foot of their 7^th tor by nightfall, leaving a massive distance to cover on the Sunday. They were up and walking at 5 o’clock on the Sunday morning, and walked for nearly 12 hours, to complete the 55 miles of their expedition with just 40 minutes to spare.

KES T20 Bath Champions for the 3rd Year running

Congratulations to the T20 team that continue their impressive record of results in this format versus teams from Bath and Bristol. Since the competition started three years ago, KES have now played 9 and won 9. The only game KES have lost in 3 years was against Kings Taunton, who went on to become eventual National winners last year.

Semi Final v Prior Park: KES 165-6 beat PP 125-8 by 40 runs.

Having got off to a brisk start, the match winning partnership was from Will Collier (66 from 46 balls) and Olly Metcalfe (36 from 32). Their 4th wicket stand of 79 in 57 balls set up the total of 165. Prior were never really in the hunt and lost wickets regularly. Metcalfe started the ball rolling with the key wicket of Seth Tapsfield caught at slip for 1, but Rupert Morgan finished off any hopes they had with the key spell of 4-0-25-3 in the middle overs.

Final v Kingswood: KES 195-3 beat KW 140-9 by 55 runs.

KES won the toss and batted first for the second time in the day. Losing Will Wales early brought Sam Mount to the crease and for the next 60 minutes it was carnage. Starting off with a partnership of 71 off 8 overs with Collier (35 off 23) and then 89 off the next 7.4 overs with Nick Green (19 off 20), Sam Mount crushed Kingswood hopes with controlled hitting and intelligent placement.His first 50 came up off 29 balls, his hundred 24 balls later. Hitting the last 4 balls for 6,4,6,6 Mount finished on 115 not out off 55 balls.

The Kingswood reply would be built around Harry Rouse who had scored a quickfire 100 in the semi final. Again Metcalfe got the first wicket and Rouse came to the crease and promptly hit his first 2 balls for 4. However in the next 5 overs KES set excellent fields and bowled good areas to restrict Rouse to only facing 3 more balls. By the time he faced his 6th ball the run rate was up to 12 an over and he was caught by a diving Will Collier off Rupert Morgan to effectively end the match. With KES having the luxury of trying out different bowling options, Kingswood eventually limped to 140-9 at 20 overs. Oli Metcalfe (2-25) and Rupert Morgan (2-28) the pick of the figures.

KES now play the winners of the Bristol and Gloucestershire groups in the last 32. Kings Taunton/Millfield will play the winners, and the last 4 will be played at Lords on June 28th in a round robin.

Easter Gold Expedition to the Peak Distrcit

Congratulations to all Duke of Edinburgh participants who successfully completed their Gold expedition in the Peak District during the Easter holidays.

This was the largest Gold expedition to take place so far, with twenty six participants. The pupils walked for four days, sometimes for 11 hours a day, carrying all their food and camping gear for the expedition. The terrain they covered was varied and at times tough, crossing peat bogs and during some steep climbs. The weather was dry, but cold with snow still present in the hollows on the hill tops.

Three of the group successfully completed their Assessed expedition. The remainder had a highly successful practice and are travelling to the Brecon Beacons during Activities week in June for their assessed expedition.

The first KES Gold Award was received by Peter Bennett, now at Medical School in London, in March. Alan Bowman and Nora Spicer, both in Year 13, have also completed their Gold Awards. This is a real achievement to have completed all sections of this prestigious award whilst still at school. Claire Bowman has successfully completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Annual Sports Dinner

The 26^th Annual King Edward’s School Sports Dinner welcomed GB Hockey player Ben Marsden as their Guest of Honour. The black tie event held on Tuesday 4^th May at Cumberwell Park celebrated the success and achievements of senior pupils throughout the sporting year.

The following prestigious awards were presented to pupils:

Sporting excellence Award; Eugene Malthouse

Guest speaker Ben Marsden is a GB (38 caps) and England (49 caps) hockey player who was part of the squad that won gold in the Olympic qualifiers in Santiago, Chile and so progressed to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 where they were 5^th. He has also represented England in the European Championships, the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Champions Trophy (one of the most prestigious tournaments in world hockey) in Malaysia in 2007.

Speaking about King Edward’s achievements in sport so far this year, Louisa Gwilliam, Director of Sport at King Edward’s School, commented:

“It has been another extremely successful sporting year at King Edward’s with both individuals and teams achieving great success. Congratulations to the Boys’ Rugby, Hockey and Cricket teams and the Girls’ Netball team who all were the Best senior team in Bath. The girls 1^st netball team gained 3^rd place at the National Schools Netball Finals in Brighton in March, for the second year running, making them one of the most consistent schools in the country. The 1^st team Cricketers were also the Forty Club winners in the West Region and Peak Sports League Champions. We are extremely proud of all that our pupils achieve in both team and individual sports.’

In addition to achieving sporting success in team sports there have been many outstanding individual performances across a range of sports at KES. These successes serve to illustrate the broad base of sporting excellence achieved at King Edward’s through a winning combination of individual dedication, personal endeavour and the strong support and encouragement from the committed coaching staff. We currently have 3 international players in major sports at the school. Rugby player Jake Oldaker was first selected to represent the South West (a great achievement in itself) and after further trials he was selected to represent England U16 in the Four Nations in Rome at Easter. Rosie Allison continues to play Netball Super League for Team Bath and is a member of the England U19 Netball Squad, and following in her remarkable footsteps Jazz Scott has gained selection for the U17 England Netball Squad after a rigorous selection programme. Eugene Malthouse the youngest member of the Team Bath Buccaneers National League team who have just won the West Conference League has been selected as part of the England U18 Extended Squad.

Jack Beazer and Hamish Milner also achieved success in rugby with Jack being selected for the U16 South West RFU in the matches against Munster and the Italian U16 National side and Hamish playing rugby for the Scottish Exiles. Individual successes have also been achieved in the fields of athletics, gymnastics and cricket. In athletics Alex Hill came 10th at the National Schools Cross Country Competition and has gained an England Vest and Joe Jukes qualified for the National Biathlon Championships. In gymnastics, Lynne Hutchison continues to excel as part of the GB Rhythmic Gymnastics team, recently competing in Germany, and in cricket Sam Mount is playing for the U19 Somerset Cricket Academy.

Chairman of Governors new appointment

We are very pleased to inform you that Mr Alan Morsley has been elected as the new Chairman of King Edward’s School, and takes office with immediate effect.

A Graduate of Imperial College, London, and Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics, Alan has spent his career in education, teaching Mathematics in both the independent and maintained sectors. He was Headmaster of Rishworth School from 1986 -1992, and then Headmaster of Plymouth College for 14 years until his retirement in 2006. During this time he also served as Chairman of the Headmaster’s Conference (South West) from 2003-2005.

Alan joined the Board of Governors in July 2007, and has held particular responsibilities for Child Protection, Human Resources and Bursaries.

Election Fever

With the general election on the horizon, pupils at King Edward’s School, Bath held their own mock election, entitled KESelect 2010, on Wednesday 24^th March.

Pupils represented the main political parties; Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, as well as a number of ‘fringe’ political parties, including; the Green Party, People’s Party of KES, SPQR and the L.A.D party.

Head of History and Politics, Rebecca Davies commented: “The purpose of the mock elections was to give pupils the opportunity to explore the political process. With the general elections coming up soon it is important that young people develop their understanding of how the democratic process works, and become aware of the issues being debated. It also gives students the opportunity to state their views on local issues.”

All parties were registered and had official party members, representing every year group within the senior school community, signed up. Politics students from Year 12 co-ordinated the campaign on behalf of the three main parties. Each party canvassed pupils, put together a party political film, which was broadcast at the hustings, and developed a party manifesto.

Rebecca Davies added: “We were very pleased with the way KESelect 2010 went, mirroring the excitement of a real election. By experiencing their own mock election we were able to encourage our young people to become engaged in the political process. It is important to the future health of our democracy that young people become involved, especially given the low number of young people that are registered to vote."

Poetry in Motion

Pupils from Years 9 and 10 enjoyed a Poetry Slam event at the end of March. The event was run by Bristol based group, Poetry Slam, who specialise in this whole body form of poetry.

The event was part of King Edward’s PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) programme. The Poetry Slam was designed to encourage pupils to work in small teams and to develop their creativity and performance skills.

Poetry slamming originated in America when a construction worker and poet called Mark Smith held the first Poetry Slam in August 1986. A Poetry Slam is a competitive event where the audience judge the poems. The competitive nature of the event encourages poets to engage with their audience and develop their performance skills in order to impress them.

Lisa Bowman, Librarian and PSHE Co-ordinator at King Edward’s School, said:

“I wanted to give the pupils a chance to develop their creativity and performance skills. The event was a good opportunity to try something completely different and very original. Pupils will be encouraged to express themselves with elements of comedy, music and dance. Years 9 and 10 will be in mixed teams which will help pupils to get to know other year groups and pupils in other form groups. It’s a great team event.”

KES Netballers triumph again!

For the second year in succession, King Edward’s Bath (KES) were delighted to have qualified for the prestigious National Schools Netball Finals to be held in Brighton on Saturday 20^th March 2010, having qualified through both the Regional and County rounds of the competition.

Following their experiences KES knew it was going to be a tough, playing against the top netball schools in the country, but the girls’ more than rose to the occasion. Winning seven of their eight pool games, KES made it through to the semi finals, finishing second in their group behind King Edward’s School, Lichfield. Their group match results were as follows:

In the semi-finals, KES faced the toughest competition of the day against favourites, Barking Abbey. They fought hard but lost 6-13 to the eventual National Netball Final winners. Meanwhile, Hartpury College (winner of the South-West round) faced King Edward’s School Lichfield, whom they beat convincingly. In the 3^rd/4^th play-off, KES met King Edward’s Lichfield again, the team who had previously beaten them in the group stages. However, the girls took control of the game from the starting whistle leading throughout, winning the game 11-9, meaning they had secured the bronze medal for the second year in a row, making them one of the most consistent Netball teams in the country.

Acting Head of Girls’ Games, Miss Helen Tully commented: “To be ranked third in the country at the highly prestigious National Schools Netball Finals for the second consecutive year is an outstanding achievement. We are extremely proud of the girls who have trained hard and given tremendous performances throughout the season. Congratulations to all the girls involved.”

Physics Olympiad Success

KES joy at Marlborough College Netball Tournament

King Edward’s School triumphed in the Marlborough College Netball U16 and U18 Tournament on Sunday 14^th March.

The 14 competing teams were split into two pools. KES beat Cheltenham College 5-3 and KES Southampton 5-4 in their first two matches.

The girls began to find their stride after that and recorded an 11-2 win over Ardingly and a 9-4 win over Canford School.

However, after a long breadk, KES were beaten 8-4 by The Royal High School, who topped the pool as a result. KES qualified as runners up following a 5-3 success against Bryanston.

That saw them pitted against Cheltenham Ladies College, who topped Pool A, and having lost out in the semi-finals last year, KES were determined to go further this time. Some excellent defensive work from Issy and Helen, including a number of interceptions, enabled KES to convert their chances and won the game 8-4. Royal High lost to hosts Marlborough College in the other semi final.

Tension was high in the final, with both teams missing vital scoring opportunities. However at 3-1 up at half time, KES were looking strong.

Marlborough fought hard in the second half, but KES managed to hold on for a 4-3 win.

The whole squad pulled together and performed well, despite missing shooter Rosie Allison and coping with injuries and illness within the team.

The triumph is a great confidence-booster ahead of KES appearance in the national finals next weekend.

Senior Orchestra win four times in a row

Congratulations to the orchestra who took part in the Mid Somerset Festival Competition on Saturday 13^th March in the Conventional Orchestra Class (up to year 13) and were awarded a commended performance, winning the MS MC Challenge Cup for the fourth time. A special note of thanks goes to Hannah Bostock, orchestra leader.

The Baroque Group also played at the Mid-Somerset Festival Competition on Saturday 13^th March and were awarded a commended performance with a glowing critique from the adjudicator.

Netball and Hockey Skills Day

Netball and Hockey coaches from Bath University teamed up with King Edward’s School to host a Netball and Hockey Skills Day on Monday 15^th March for local primary schools.

Over 70 children from Bathwick St Mary’s, St. Stephen’s Primary School, King Edward’s Junior School, Heywood Preparatory School and Springmead Preparatory School took part in the event.

The purpose of the day was to help the children improve their skills at the game and have an enjoyable day. By giving them confidence in their abilities it is hoped to encourage a lifelong enthusiasm for both netball and hockey.

Helen Tully, Acting Head of Girls’ Games at King Edward’s School commented:

“We are delighted to welcome such expert coaches to King Edward’s School. The Netball and Hockey Skills Day is a superb opportunity for pupils to develop their skills. Best-selling teen novelist Joanna Nadin launches KES Short Story competition

Novelist and best-selling author of teen fiction, Joanna Nadin, launched the KES Short Story Competition this week when she visited King Edward’s to share her advice on writing novels with pupils.

Joanna Nadin, who was shortlisted for the Queen of Teen literary awards last year, alongside Jacqueline Wilson, Cathy Cassidy and Louise Rennison, had plenty of ideas to help pupils develop their writing. Joanna was also very keen to encourage pupils to use the opportunity of the KES Short Story Competition to start writing.

Jake Oldaker selected for the England U16 Rugby squad.

Jake will represent England in the forthcoming International matches at Easter. The England U16 rugby team will be embarking on a 12 day tour to Italy in April. The team will play the Italian U17 XV in Rome, and then play France U17 and Wales U16.

Jake Oldaker achieved his selection for the England U16 England squad following trials at Abingdon during February half term. Previously Jake had been part of the U16 South West RFU Division.

Mr Tidball, 1^st XV Coach and Head of Rugby at King Edward’s School said: “The School are delighted and very proud to report that Jake has been selected for the England U16 Rugby squad. This is a fantastic achievement and we wish Jake all the best for the forthcoming matches in Italy.”

Jack Beazer selected for the U16 South West RFU

Congratulations are also due to Jack Beazer, who was selected to represent the U16 South West RFU at the Divisional Festival. Jack has been selected to play for the U16 South West RFU in the forthcoming matches against Munster and the Italian U16 National side.

Running for Help the Heroes

Rob Goodman, Year 12, will be running the Bath Half Marathon in full British army kit, including boots and backpack, to raise money for Help the Heroes.

Speaking about his decision, Rob Goodman commented:

“I have decided to run the Bath Half Marathon 2010 with my day in aid of Help for Heroes. It is a cause close to my heart due to my chosen career path into the military, as I was lucky enough to receive an Army scholarship in November 2009. As I am sure you will agree the news of British soldier fatalities is sadly becoming an ever increasing occurrence. For those soldiers who are lucky enough to escape death they are often left with life-changing injuries. Help for Heroes is a charity whose aim is to reduce the impact of these injuries to the solider and rehabilitate them. They are hugely successful already in helping all servicemen and women but money is still needed to continue and improve their work.”

Catering Success

Five members of the catering department at King Edward School, Bath are celebrating this month having successfully passed their National Vocational Qualifications Level 2 NVQ in Multi-Skilled Hospitality Services.

Richard Sampson from Hospitality Industry Training presented Margaret Thorpe, Mandy Russell, Helen Sullivan, Pat Appleby and Liz Wilkins with their City & Guilds award certificates.

Angela Barker, Catering Manager, said: “We pride ourselves on the high quality of our food service and the professionalism of our staff. The training programme has been beneficial for our staff and good for our department. It is always nice to see members of our dedicated team gain recognition for their hard work during training over the past year.”

Richard Sampson, who carries out training for many School Catering Departments in the area, commented: “I am delighted to present these dedicated members of the Catering team with their certificates. They are one of the most organised catering departments I have come across and the standard and quality of food preparation, food hygiene and service is outstanding. Well done and many congratulations.”
