King Edward’s pupils gain awards at Bristol Model United Nations Conference

Pupils from King Edward’s School, Bath were delighted to receive awards at the Bristol Model United Conference which took place over the weekend of the 4^th and 5^th of February at Bristol Grammar School.

For all but one of the twelve King Edward’s School delegates this was their first Model United Nations Conference. The KESBath pupils, from Years 9 and 10, were competing against twelve other schools from Bath, Chippenham, Bristol, Exeter and Taunton.

King Edward’s pupils received the following awards;

Jim Brennan, Year 9, was awarded Best Young Delegate in the General Assembly, and his contribution to the Environment Committee was noted by the chairs.

Ella Schofield, Year 10, was awarded the prize for Best Delegate on the Security Council, an award which is always hotly contested.

Alex Musselwhite, Rory Whybrow, Ella and Jim, who collectively represented the United Kingdom, were awarded the prize for Best Delegation in the General Assembly debate.

Ms Rich, Model United Nations Co-ordinator, commented: “A huge well done to all pupils who took part in the Bristol Model United Nations Conference. It was a delight to see every single pupil participating with confidence and insight in their respective committees. Several KESBath pupils submitted successful resolutions, and all engaged with the issues debated with maturity and eloquence. We wish them every success at future MUN events.”

Mums & Daughters brave the cold for Netball Tournament

The weather on Saturday 4^th February was frosty but that didn’t deter mums and daughters from taking part in the annual Mothers’ and Daughters’ Netball Tournament.

The morning began with girls’ warm up matches for Years 3 – 7, which provided a good opportunity for parents to re-cap some rules and cheer on their daughters.

At 10.00am it was the mothers’ turn to play in a round robin format of all mum teams playing alongside mixed teams of Year 8 – 13 girls.

The day was great fun, a few cold toes and fingers but lots of smiles.

King Edward’s School Cadets tackle an emergency to gain First Aid qualification

Over 20 cadets from King Edward’s School’s Combined Cadet Force spent the weekend of the 4^th and 5^th February working towards the St John’s Ambulance First Aid qualification.

The first day was spent covering the basics of first aid. On the Sunday Cadets had to put everything they had covered in the Saturday training sessions into practice during some realistic emergency scenarios.

The Cadets were confronted by the scene of traffic accident with two casualties. Working in small groups they set about assessing the situation and preparing to administer relevant first aid help. Then suddenly, ‘CRASH!’ the Head of Maintenance falls off his ladder, now there are three casualties but wait, ‘BANG’, Lt. Drury staggers out of the range, a cadet had shot him by accident, four casualties.

The Cadets were now dealing with a crisis emergency situation where they had to think fast and work hard organising and distributing first aid to all, not forgetting to contact the emergency services to summon help.

Commanding Officer, Captain Holdaway, commented: ’The Cadets kept very cool under pressure, reaching the standards required of the First Aid qualification with ease. Congratulations to all Cadets who passed their First Aid qualification with flying colours. A great, enjoyable weekend was had by all.”

Congratulations to King Edward’s British Schools’ Biathlon competitors

Twelve pupils at King Edward’s Senior and Junior School were delighted to be selected for the first of four Schools’ Biathlon Championship Semi Finals which took place at Bath University on Sunday 22^nd January.

Selection was tough. Schools were asked to submit run and swim times and only the top 50 out of a total 6,000 entries were invited to compete in each class.

The event saw pupils from Years 5 to 7 tackling a 50m swim and 500m run, while Years 8 to Year 13 pupils had to complete a 100m swim and 1000m run for Years 8 to 12/13. Points are awarded for each discipline and final positions are decided by the total number of points achieved after both disciplines. There was also a team element to the competition as the three top scoring individuals from a School in a class will count as a team.

King Edward’s School tops new GCSE league tables

Pupils receiving their GCSE results

The latest Government league tables, based on 2011 exam results, have just been released and place King Edward’s School as the leading school in Bath and North East Somerset at GCSE.

An impressive 100% of King Edward’s pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs (including Maths and English) at grades A* - C.

Deputy Head Academic, Mr Tim Burroughs, commented: “We are delighted that the league tables reflect the hard work of both the pupils and teachers. More than three quarters of entries graded A* or A and almost 41% at the prestigious top grade with a third of pupils gaining 6 A* grades or better, with the top performers achieving 10, 11 and, in one case, an astonishing 12 A* grades.”

U19 Regional & County Netball Champions

King Edward’s School U19 netball squad fought off tough opposition at the Regional round of the National Schools’ Netball competition last Saturday to progress to the Nationals for the third time in four years.

Both King Edward’s U14 and U19 netball squads made it through to the Regional Rounds of the National Schools’ Competition which took place in Bournemouth on Saturday 28^th January.

This is fifth consecutive year that KES have qualified with two teams to the South West round of the Competition.

The top 14 schools in the South West began their campaign in two pool sections. The U19 squad got off to a slow start with a narrow loss. The next five games saw KES find form with 5 victories, scoring 53 goals and conceding only 24. The semi- final saw KES meet Millfield, and a win would secure a place at the National Schools final in March. The girls played with passion, control and determination to take the lead from the start to comfortably win 11- 8. The girls will travel to Basildon, Essex, in March to take on the best netball schools in the country. This will be the third time in four years that KES U19’s have played at the National Finals. The majority of the squad have been playing netball at KES since the Junior School or for the past seven years at Senior School, their achievement highlights the success of netball coaching in developing talented netballers.

The U14 squad also maintained a high standard, top in their pool and gaining a place in the semi-finals. Against a tall and strong Clifton College team the girls fought hard, losing 13- 6, and missing out on a place at the National Round. In the 3rd/4th play off they beat Canford 9-6 to take 3^rd place.

King Edward’s School were the only School in the South West to have two teams represented in the varying age groups in the semi-finals.

Director of Sport and Head of Netball Louisa Gwilliam said ' It was a superb day. I was so proud of all the girls, they have trained hard and reaped the rewards of hard work and dedication. The U14 squad getting so close was really disappointing but just highlights the depth of talent we have at KES and the future will continue to look bright. It was a team effort from the girls and staff. Many thanks to all the supporters.'

King Edward’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh participants successfully complete Orienteering Day

50 pupils from King Edward’s School’s Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award programme took part in a day of Orienteering at the Azimghur Barracks in Colerne on Sunday 29^th January.

The day was an opportunity for pupils to put into practice their navigational skills, which they have been learning in Duke of Edinburgh sessions at School.

The day provided challenging conditions with poor visibility, due to low level fog, and freezing cold.

Pupils were organised into groups of five, equipped with a compass and a map, and told to find check points which would contain their ration packs and cooking equipment for preparing lunch. All groups returned within a couple of hours armed with their food and cooking stove. Pupils were trained on how to cook their lunch and then they tucked into a well-deserved hot meal.

Miss Costanza, Bronze DofE Co-ordinator commented;

“I would like to say a big thank you to Miss Gilbert and Miss Kayacan, who spent two hours waiting by the checkpoints in freezing conditions, to Sergeant Jones, for organising the day and to Mr Cunningham for his help and experience on the day.”

The next training day will be a walk on the Mendips on Sunday 26^th February 2012.

Pupils and teachers from Suzhou Foreign Language School enjoy visit to King Edward’s School

King Edward’s School were delighted to welcome 14 pupils and one teacher from Suzhou Foreign Language School on an educational visit to Bath from the 15^th to 29^th January.

Their visit was part of the Bath Suzhou Educational Partnership (BSEP). The partnership was set up to promote educational collaboration and enhance international understanding through educational and cultural links between schools in Bath and Suzhou.

During their time at King Edward’s, the group took part in lessons at the Senior School, visited the Pre-Prep School and Junior School, presented an Assembly and were guest speakers at a lunchtime Senior School Philosophical club, called Socrates. The pupils were happy to answer questions from King Edward’s pupils about how life and education in China compared to ours.

The group had a number of different excursions during their stay. They visited the sites of Bath including Bath University and travelled to London and Oxford. The pupils experienced family life by staying with host families during their visit. Whilst with their host families they enjoyed a number of additional trips to see various local sites such as Stonehenge and Wardour Castle.

The visit follows a similar exchange trip which took place during October half term when seven pupils from King Edward’s School accompanied by a teacher, Mr John Turner, travelled to Shanghai, Suzhou and Beijing.

Mr John Turner commented: "The visit has proved an enormous success, and many lasting friendships have been established."

King Edward’s Combined Cadet Force hone shooting technique using state of the art laser equipment

King Edward’s Combined Cadet Force cadets were invited to use the state of the art electronic ranges at the MOD Corsham base on Thursday 26^th January.

After a full day of school the cadets spent an evening honing their shooting technique using laser equipped rifles and an electronic target screen. The weapons had a sophisticated array of sensors that gave instant feedback on how firmly the guns were held, trigger pressure and other metrics.

The grouping size improved as they quickly learned the correct technique and put into practice the ‘marksmanship principles’.

CCF Commanding Officer, Captain Holdaway, commented: “We are extremely grateful to the MOD for allowing our cadets to use their very impressive multimillion pound facility. We hope to make use of these facilities on a more regular basis, as our links with the MOD at Colerne continue to flourish.”

Year 9 learn how to create a film

Year 9 enjoyed a full day of film-making with the Young Film Academy, a leading provider of practical film-making programmes to young people.

The students gained experience as scriptwriters, camera operators, directors and actors; invaluable skills to help them with their end of term assessment in Drama in which they are required to produce their own short film sequence.

King Edward’s Senior School pupils enjoyed a visit from swimmer Kate Grey on Tuesday 24^th January to talk to them about the importance of Olympic values and the forthcoming Paralympic Games 2012.

As the nation prepares for the London 2012 Olympics pupils at King Edward’s have joined the Olympics Get Set Programme which promotes one of seven key values every month.

In January, the value is Courage and who better to talk about this important attribute than Kate Grey who had to overcome the loss of her arm to achieve her dream of swimming at the Paralympic Games.

During her visit Kate endorsed the work by pupils to embrace the Olympic values. To co-ordinate all the pupil’s ideas for promoting the Olympic values within school, a Get Set Team has been set up. Every form has two representatives in the Get Set Team.

The values for each month are as follows: January (Courage), February (Excellence), March (Determination), April (Respect), May (Equality), June (Friendship), July (Inspiration).

Pupils have created an Olympic display and form posters illustrating the monthly values and the Get Set Team are working on an Olympics themed cake competition and talent show for later in the term.

King Edward’s Junior School pupils will be taking part in a School Olympics day on Monday 21^st May.

Oxbridge success for 12 King Edward’s Year 13 pupils

Many congratulations are due to the twelve Sixth Form pupils from King Edward’s School, Bath who have received offers from either Oxford or Cambridge in this year’s round of university applications.

After a gruelling three-month wait from initial application to hearing whether they would be successful, the pupils are delighted and relieved, to be holding offers to study subjects ranging from Spanish & Italian, to Engineering, and Politics, Psychology & Sociology (PPS). This year’s applicants were equally split between Oxford and Cambridge and represent 13% of the year group who applied for a place at university this year.

Pupils are only permitted to apply to one of either Oxford or Cambridge under the UCAS system of university applications. After spending the latter part of Year 12 preparing themselves for the academic rigour expected from these leading universities, all of the pupils had to finish their UCAS application by mid-October. All King Edward’s pupils who applied for Oxford or Cambridge were invited for interview, showing that they all had the qualities needed to study at the highest level.

After practice interviews and challenging and stimulating discussions in the school’s ThinkTank group, the King Edward’s pupils apparently greatly impressed the world-leading dons and fellows who grilled them. For those applying to Oxford the news was in before Christmas, while those applying to Cambridge had to wait until the first weeks of January to hear their fate.

Head of Higher Education and UCAS, Mr Richard Thomas, said: “We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the interviewees for their hard work and talent in getting this far.

With around four candidates vying for each place, we might have expected only a handful to have got through at interview. Instead we are extremely proud of our successful twelve. Now they must concentrate on achieving the A and A* grades they have been predicted this summer. Good luck!”

King Edward’s Senior School Poetry Competition 2011

The winners of this year’s annual Poetry Competition were announced in whole School assembly on Tuesday 17^th January.

The theme was Brave New World which resulted in over 150 entries from all year groups.

Head of English, Mrs Sylvia Cooper, commented:

“Poetry isn’t meant to be bland or safe and these entries certainly weren’t!

Some writers took the theme at face value, producing poems about exciting planets, underwater discoveries and even falling in love, the prevailing mood was somewhat serious – warfare, environmental catastrophe, political revolutions all featured strongly, remind me to choose something a bit cheerier next year!

As ever, it was an agonising but also exhilarating process, trying to make the final decisions as to who would win one of the six prizes.”

All the winning entries were characterised by inventive use of language and form, adventurous and sometimes risqué subject matter and – most important – a unique personal voice.”

U13 County Cricket Champions - through to the National rounds

‘What a Show!’ - CABARET

The combined Drama and Theatre Studies and Music Department’s performance of Cabaret, directed by Victoria Craig-Stevens, was outstanding.

All those that saw it were smitten, the Headmaster summed up the collective experience succinctly as ‘What a Show!’ and what a show it truly was.

Five of the main characters were double cast, such is their passion for drama they would not be dissuaded from participating in the School production in their final year despite their heavy work schedules and having to attend University interviews during performance week. This dedication and it being their swan song performance at KES only made the experience all the more special.

Set in Berlin in the 1930s against the backdrop of the rise of the Nazis and the seedy glamour of the city’s nightclub scene, the story unfolded.

The eccentric Emcee (Constance Chapman/Ruby McKee) opened the show to reveal the fabulous Kit Kat Club. Both girls had voices which commanded attention and utilised provocative gestures and mannerisms to both entertain and draw in the audience.

When the young American writer Clifford Bradshaw (Jake Hight/Josh Forster) arrives in Berlin, a place to live is found for him by the shady Ernst Ludwid (Henry Asplin/Josh Spraggs), he is pointed in the direction of the Kit Kat Club, and the next day Sally Bowles (Faye Maidment/Hannah Ward) has moved herself and her suitcases into his room. This sets the scene for the political events to follow.

The older Herr Schultz (Alex Prescott/Max Lury) and Fraulein Schneider (Claire Bowman/Bianca Watts), Clifford’s landlady, enjoy their engagement party, but Fraulein Schneider breaks it off the next day, realising that her fiancé’s Jewishness, which yesterday had been irrelevant, was now, in the light of political events, a huge impediment.

With stunning costumes and wonderful choreography, the Kit Kat Club dancers, accompanied by music from the school orchestra (with Director of Music, Rupert Drury) performed a variety of skilful and brilliantly choreographed dance routines.

Sally Bowles (Faye Maidment/Hannah Ward) each gave strong performances showing maturity way beyond years, they were convincing throughout and obviously extremely talented all round performers; hitting the notes beautifully and entertaining all with their risqué dance routines.

Frau Kost (Charlie Miller) was marvellously comedic as the ‘working girl’ trying to keep her many male visitors out of sight of her landlady.

The orchestra, who were ever present above the stage throughout the performance, were magnificent, providing spot-on musical accompaniment to the action throughout.

The level of musicianship from all was phenomenal; thank you to; Steven Ward, Georgie Philips, Cameron Berry, Alba Hubbard, Steven Whilthew, Clem Faux, Anthony Ashby, Dan Wray and Will Holtham joined by professionals; Sue Lawson, Trudy Monday, Vincent Ford, Laurie Jones, Alan Bowman, Phil Weaver and Mark Boden.

A special mention also needs to be made of the rest of the cast; the threatening SS officers, sailors, Kit Kat boys and girls, Taxi men and Orchestra cabaret girls all played their parts to perfection. The technical team; costumes (Lucia Snell/Megan Watkins), wardrobe mistress (Julie Haines/Alice Bradley); set and lightening (Sam Rendell), Sound Operator (Richard Monks) and Stage Management (Andrew Meadows/James Wright/Louis Adams/Jenni Meadows) Scenic artist (Sidney Rendell) crew and make-up were all incredible, transforming both the Wroughton Theatre and entire cast into a totally convincing world circa 1930s Berlin.

King Edward’s School musicians selected for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain.

Congratulations to India Raynes (Y8) and Emma Jones (Y6) who have both won places in the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO).

India, a Year 8 student at King Edward’s Senior School, has successfully auditioned for the third year running and remains a member of the U13 Orchestra playing the Viola. She is working towards her Grade 8 viola exam and is taking Grade 7 piano in the spring. India is taught viola by Professor Robert Turrell from the Royal Academy of Music and is lucky enough to have an instrument on loan from the Royal College of Music.

In the past year, India has performed with the NCO at the Brighton Dome, Birmingham Town Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank in London, as well as spending 16 nights on residential courses.

At KES, India plays in the Senior Orchestra, the Baroque Group and also the Advanced String Quintet.

Emma Jones, Year 6, at King Edward’s Junior School has won a place in the U12 Orchestra playing the cello. Emma is working towards Grade 6 exams on both cello and piano, and she also fits in the time to learn the cornet! This will be Emma’s first year with the NCO and she is looking forward to the courses enormously.

In the Junior School, Emma plays in the Orchestra, Wind Band, String Group, Cello Group and the String Quartet.

The NCO was formed in 1978 and brings together hundreds of talented 7 – 13 year olds across from across the country offering them a life-changing experience during which they will meet like-minded people and receive tuition from top musicians. This year saw a record number of children auditioning, with almost 1000 fighting for a coveted place in one of the five age banded orchestras.

Xavier Raynes

Congratulations also go to Xavier Raynes who is currently on the reserve list for the U11Orchestra. He has been invited to join as an Associate Member which is for a small group of children who were of the correct standard, but there just weren’t enough places. There are only four places for the bassoon in the whole country in his age group so to be first reserve is actually quite exciting and a hugely successful achievement. Xavier will also be able to audition next year for the same age group orchestra (as he is still only nine!) and plays the piano as well. Xavier has also been invited to attend the Orchestra’s South West regional rehearsals every month with India and Emma.

King Edward’s School’s U14 Boys’ Rugby enjoy an incredible season unbeaten

King Edward’s School’s U14A rugby squad have completed a fantastic season with a clean sweep of victories against local and regional rivals.

Despite tough opposition throughout the twelve matches the U14s were victorious in every game.

Injury has, on occasions, beset the squad and they are deeply indebted to B team members who have joined them to bolster the team during the season.

U14 Boys’ Rugby Coach, Mr Mathew Oehler commented:

“It has been a pleasure to coach such a talented and dedicated group of players. They have all trained and played with passion, determination and a great deal of ability but, more importantly, they have performed as a team and have always fought hard for each other. It was in the more competitive victories against the likes of QEH Bristol, Sir Thomas Rich’s and Prior Park where this teamwork and collegiality was most in evidence and all the coaching staff at the school are very proud of their remarkable achievement this term.”

Team captain, Joe Jones said: “I am thrilled with this season’s results. Everyone in the team should be very proud as everyone has played a part in every victory. But special thanks must go to our coach, Mr Oehler, who has inspired us these last few month

King Edward’s girl selected for Royal Yacht Association’s National Youth Squad

Ellie Cumpsty, Year 10, is one of just eighteen youngsters in the UK to have been selected for the Royal Yacht Association’s National Youth Squad.

At just fifteen Ellie is one of the youngest to be selected for the prestigious Royal Yacht Association’s National Youth Squad (U18s).

With only eighteen places available in the Squad, six of which are for girls, standards for qualifying are extremely high and competition is fierce. As a result it is more usual for older teenagers, who have more sailing experience, to be selected.

Ellie’s results in the selector events were of such a high standard that not only has she been selected for the National Youth Squad, she has also been selected to receive extra training with the Transition Training Squad.

The Transition Training Squad is for sailors moving out of the junior class of boat into the Laser Youth class. There are only twelve places available for this Squad, three of which are for girls, and again selection is based on results from sailors competing in certain races and competitions.

Director of Sport, Louisa Gwilliam, said: “Ellie is a highly talented young sailor and a real name to watch for the future of sail racing. Congratulations to Ellie, we wish you every success with your training and future competition sailing.”

Thank you to everyone for such a huge response to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

King Edward’s Senior School were once again proud to support the appeal for the Salvation Army in their work with the elderly, homeless, lonely and distressed of Bath.

At a special assembly on Tuesday 13^th December pupils and staff donated tinned foodstuffs, toiletries, sleeping bags, woollen hats, scarves and gloves to the appeal.

Major Andrew Diaper-Clausen of the Salvation Army gratefully received the gifts which will be distributed to those in greatest need over the winter season.
