Admissions at King Edward's School, Bath

King Edward’s School, Bath is one of the top academic independent day Schools in the UK for girls and boys aged 3 to 18 years. The recent Independent School Inspectorate report judged King Edward’s School to be ‘outstanding’ with one of the best reports in the country.

The School provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for children from a variety of backgrounds, in which each individual is encouraged to strive for excellence and to acquire a lifelong passion for knowledge, discovery and adventure. There is a broad and dynamic curriculum and a host of extra-curricular activities to interest and enrich the lives of all pupils. This is underpinned by ‘outstanding’ pastoral care, amongst the best Schools in Avon and Wiltshire.

Pupils achieve outstanding success in many areas. The strength of music in the school is reflected in the excellent levels of public performances, the considerable success in examinations and the regularity with which pupils gather honours at regional music festivals. The School has an outstanding dramatic tradition, with two or more major productions a year, an Art Department which is a centre of excellence and a tradition of sporting success, with many pupils representing their sport at both regional and national levels.

The facilities are excellent. The Senior School is situated on a fourteen acre site at North Road, on the south-eastern slopes overlooking the beautiful city of Bath. The main playing fields, comprising 17 acres, are attractively situated at one end of the Limpley Stoke valley, about a mile from the School. An All Weather Synthetic Pitch on the main School site has proved invaluable for hockey and tennis, and as an intensively used practice area for games.

The Rutherford Sports Hall and netball courts are situated at the lower part of the site together with a state-of-the-art academic centre for science, geography, modern foreign languages and IT.

Art and Photography, Design and Technology are housed in an extended and modernised custom-built suite of studios adjacent the stylish sixth form learning and social centre. Also recently refurbished in recent years is Nethersole House, at the top of the site, which provides suited accommodation for Psychology, Business Studies and Economics, History, Classics and Religious Studies.

King Edward’s is committed to ensuring that all children with academic potential have the opportunity to become part of the school. There are bursaries available as well as scholarships and special talent awards in art, drama, music and sport for pupils.

What makes the School so special is passionate teaching, pupils who are motivated learners with a determination to achieve their goals and pursue their interests.

Pupils join King Edward's from a wide area including Bath and its environs and from many Wiltshire Schools.

Financial assistance for parents

Bringing your daughter or son to King Edward’s School for their education is a decision that will benefit them hugely for their rest of their lives.  However, it also represents a significant financial commitment on your part which should not be underestimated.

At King Edward’s School, we recognise this commitment and always aim to obtain the best possible value out of the fee income we receive in the provision of an all-round education for our pupils.  As a Charity, the School is non-profit-making, and all surpluses are therefore reinvested in the premises, facilities and equipment needed to support that education in all its aspects.

Since its establishment in 1552 the School has a long and proud tradition of providing education for able pupils from less well-off families and a main purpose of the Charity is to provide financial support for parents towards the cost of fees through a programme of means-tested bursaries for entrants to King Edward’s Senior School.

BURSARIES

Entry at Year 7

Entrance Bursaries: each year the School awards approximately 10 pupils Entrance Bursaries of amounts ranging between 10% and 100% of the annual fee, with any award assessed on the family’s individual financial circumstances and ability to pay.  All pupils applying to join the School in Year 7 are eligible to apply.

Once awarded, unless parental circumstances change, Entrance Bursaries can normally continue through the child’s time at the School up to and including Year 13, subject to an annual review. Bursaries may be varied up or down if parents’ financial circumstances alter.  The School endeavours to increase the award proportionately in line with year on year fee increases, although this is dependent on the School’s economic and financial circumstances and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Within the Entrance Bursary Awards up to 4 pupils are eligible for a special award of 50% of the annual fee, and these are awarded to the most able pupils coming from a State School into Year 7, whose families would not normally be able to afford a private education.  These are also means-tested, in line with our charitable objects, and as with the Entrance Bursaries can continue through to Year 13.  It is possible for this award to be supplemented by a normal Entrance Bursary to offer up to 100% assistance.

Entry at Sixth Form

Sixth Form Bursaries: as well as the existing Entrance Bursaries that can continue into the Sixth Form, the equivalent of six further places is available for new entrants into the Sixth Form.  These are also means-tested Bursaries, and awards can range from 10-100% of the annual fee and, as with the Entrance Bursaries, will generally increase proportionately to the following year’s fee increase.  Whilst these Bursaries are primarily aimed at external applicants from State Schools, consideration will also be given in exceptional circumstances to applications from existing pupils not currently in receipt of an Entrance Bursary.

The Bursary Application Process

A Bursary Application form with guidance notes can be obtained by ticking the appropriate box on the Application form in your pack; the forms are in line with the generally-accepted principles of HMC Schools with regard to making means-tested awards.  Additional copies are available on request from Mrs Jane Howard, Bursar’s Office, Stewart Building, King Edward’s School, North Road, Bath BA2 6HU; by telephone on 01225 820333 or by e-mail to kesadmin@kesbath.com.

Applicants are particularly requested to note the Closing date for Applications.

Late applications may be accepted in exceptional circumstances, but are less likely to receive an award given the limited nature of the funds available.

Award Decisions: Bursary awards are made on the basis of an assessment of the family’s financial circumstances, including their savings, investments and realisable assets, as well as their income, major outgoings, the size of their family, any other persons dependent on them and other similar factors.

All assessments and awards are determined jointly by the Headmaster and Bursar, and decisions are communicated either prior to, or at the same time as, the offer of a place at the School.  In the event of places/offers not being accepted the Bursary applications can be revisited to use the full budget and/or be used for late applicants.

Other Scholarships & Awards:

Year 7: Academic Scholarships:  will be awarded to those pupils who excel in the entrance examinations, and Special Talent Awards are awarded to candidates who show outstanding talent in one of the following areas:  Art, Drama, Music and Sport.  Applications for Special Talent awards can be made via the Registration Form.

Year 12 (Sixth Form) Entrance Awards:  A limited number of discretionary Headmaster’s Awards are also available for entry into the Sixth Form.

Sibling Discounts: we do not offer automatic sibling discounts but we do take into account any siblings at the School whenever we receive applications for financial assistance through the bursary-award process.  Our policy is to keep the School fees as affordable as possible whilst providing a high-quality education, and to direct our limited bursarial resources to situations of most need.
