Pastoral Care
King Edward’s School recognises that for many children coming to a large secondary school is a big step. To make this an easy transition King Edward’s School places great emphasis on pastoral care.
Pupils entering the School at Year 7 join a form group with its own Form Tutor who has pastoral responsibility for every pupil in the class. In addition, every form has its own Prefect who acts as an additional mentor to the class should they wish to discuss any issues that are concerning them.
To encourage interaction across year groups forms regularly compete against each other in sports activities which help to instil a sense of team spirit and achievement from an early age. It also enables the class to meet and socialise with other pupils from the same year. Clubs and activities are another opportunity for developing friendship groups with other pupils both within the same year and also throughout the School.
King Edward’s School places a very high priority on the pastoral care of each boy and girl in its care. From the moment pupils enter our Lower School to the day they leave our Sixth Form, the School provides them with a comprehensive support system to help them progress, feel welcome and to address any issues they may face.
All members of the teaching staff have a responsibility for ensuring the well being of each individual. Pupils are encouraged to care for each other, with the older boys and girls offering help and support to the younger members of the school.
King Edward’s School believes that pupils need to be equipped with information to help them make informed choices throughout their life. An important feature of the education at the School is the Personal, Social and Health Education programme which addresses matters such as relationships, drugs, care of property, and bullying, thereby ensuring that all pupils have an awareness of the important issues which affect their lives.
The tutor system at King Edward’s School is central to the way we help pupils develop, both academically and generally. Tutors will liaise with subject teachers, and so monitor academic progress, or help deal with problems as they emerge. Tutors are a ‘listening ear’ who regularly give advice on many different topics from; subject choices, careers advice to exam revision plans. A Tutor is always available to support and comfort a pupil should they need someone to talk to. The tutor is in regular contact with parents, and is always happy to discuss a child’s progress with parents.
Pupils meet regularly for assembly. King Edward’s School is an inclusive community which respects the cultural and social backgrounds of every child. Religious Studies in the School covers all major world faiths so that pupils have a broad understanding of our diverse society and learn to be kind, considerate and understanding.
Sixth Form Pastoral Care
