Bakery business grows from strength to strength

Year 12 Business Studies students enjoyed a visit to Marshfield Bakery in early May.  The business, started in 1984 by Lynne & Paul White, produces award-winning hand made snack bars, biscuits, fruitcakes and seasonal goods.

Ben White, a former KES pupil who joined Marshfield Bakery as Sales Director in 2003, gave students a guided tour of the bakery. Pupils saw products being made in small batches using locally sourced ingredients. After the tour pupils enjoyed an informative question and answer session focusing on finance and marketing aspects of the business.

Marshfield Bakery has gone from strength to strength and now occupies a 7,500 sq ft bespoke manufacturing plant near Junction 18 of the M4. Future plans include a retail facility on site where customers will be able to purchase flapjacks, shortcakes, biscuits, fruitcakes and other products directly from the Bakery.

Easter workshop for Bathwick St Mary's

On the Wednesday before Easter Year 3's from Bathwick St Mary's Primary School visited King Edward's School to learn about the way Easter is celebrated in Germany. Ms Katrin Berins showed photos and demonstrated some typical Easter crafts from Germany, which the children had great fun creating. They were especially pleased to be given some German chocolate eggs to add to their Easter baskets on the way back to school.

Stars in their eyes

Members of the School’s Astronomical Society were invited to attend the 28th annual lecture of the William Herschel Society at which Dr. John Mason FRAS spoke about the latest developments in our understanding of the planet Mars.

Dr. Mason’s lecture was fascinating - lively and accessible, full of humorous anecdotes and illustrated by some stunning full-colour photographs of the Martian landscape. After the lecture Dr. Mason took questions from the floor.

Bath has an honoured place in the history of UK astronomy, William Herschel made many of his discoveries here and his house is now a museum, anyone interested in astronomy would enjoy a visit to the museum which is based at Herschel House, 19 New King Street, Bath - www.williamherschel.org.uk.

Art Attack for Year 9
Year 9 enjoyed a day of art when four artists; Fiona Robson (wire sculpture), Bryce Davies (graffiti), Emma Dibben (illustration) and Madelaine Town (lino cut engraving)  introduced pupils to a number of different artistic techniques.

The day was designed to enable pupils to try different genres of art and encourage them to use the techniques to develop their own artwork and express their own creativity.

The day was a great success. Pupils greatly benefited from the experience and expertise of the visiting artists and produced some wonderful artwork.
