Bath OE Rugby team win monthly award

The Bath Old Edwardians' rugby team has had a remarkable turnaround in fortune. After a major struggle to find players at the beginning of the season, they have been named as December's Bath Chronicle/Greensward Sports Consultancy Team of the Month!

The club, which has been in existence for 86 years, lost players two seasons ago which resulted in the team missing key opening matches.  However, new leavers from KES and locally-based players joined this season and since the start of October, the team have surged ahead by winning eight of their nine matches.

Their biggest success to date was in early January, with a 64-10 home win over St Bernadette's 3rds.  Two more victories in December - 62-12 against Nailsea and a 44-0 win against previous table-toppers Oldfield drew the attention of the judges, who have awarded the team the monthly prize of a case of Wadworth 6X and a signed Bath Rugby ball.

Captain Andy Todd said "We're seventh in the table so I don't think winning the league is realistic, but with clubs not being able to have more than one team in a division there is a chance we could gain promotion if we finish in the top four."

Interested in joining the club? contact Andy Todd on 07980 505585 or email bathoe_rugby@hotmail.com

The club trains at the KES playing fields at Bathampton on Thursdays at 7pm with matches on Saturday afternoons.

OE wins 7th UK All Stars Poetry Slam!

Tim_Brewis_web_version_rev_1.jpg

Tim Brewis, 1996 leaver, has won the 7th UK All Stars Poetry Slam! at the 2011 Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.  This prestigious event is famed as the biggest poetry slam in Europe and was a fiercely competitive evening with a total of 15 poets taking part.

Poetry slams are competitive performance poetry where competitors are judged on the quality of their writing, performance and the warmth of the audience response.  Slams are knock-out events that take place over three rounds.  In each round, poets have three minutes in which to perform a poem or poems of their own.  Tim's performances included a critique of the sexualisation of young people by the media, a war poem, Suspension and a sensitive and humorous piece about marriage.

After leaving KES, Tim studied English Literature at the University of Exeter and then began his professional life as a soldier, serving as an Infantry Officer in 1st Battalion, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire regiment.  After several tours of Northern Ireland, he decided to go into teaching - convinced that the classroom was infinitely preferable to the interior of a Snatch Landrover - and he is currently Head of English and Drama at Cheltenham College.  He is married to Georgina and they have two sons, Oliver and Henry, and a daughter, Helena.

As well as being a performance poet, Tim is an accomplished page poet and much of his material is war poetry about the recent conflict in Iraq and the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.  He counts Owen, Edward Thomas, Hardy and Norman MacCaig as his strongest influences.

Headmaster's thank you

Dear Old Edwardians

To have successfully reached our target for the 2011 Annual Bursary Fund, is a fantastic feat. This achievement is due, in very large part, to the generosity and unstinting support of the Old Edwardian community.  To know that the School is now in a position to provide bursarial help to a pupil who could not otherwise attend KES is a cause for real celebration.

As Headmaster, I meet many bright and deserving pupils and I can assure you that this Annual Bursary Fund will be used to support a pupil who will flourish in this environment and be a real credit to the School.

On behalf of myself, the governors and staff at King Edward's School, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude and thanks and hope that, with your continued support, we can build on this tremendous start and continue on to meet our 2012 target.

With my thanks and very best wishes
Martin Boden
Headmaster
