ENTRY REQUIREMENT:

Previous art / photography / design/digital editing would be advantageous and candidates would be interviewed by the Head of Department.

PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE:

This is a practical course which has proved to be of great interest to those students seeking entry to art colleges to supplement their main art studies or as a starting point for a career in Art and Design or the Media industries. The Course consists of four set units to complete the full A level or two units to complete the AS level. Each unit of work will expand the students’ knowledge of different photographic skills in both traditional (monochrome film) and digital format.

The aim of the course is to develop independent and self-motivated and confident photographic practice. Units cover studio, digital and darkroom practices, as well as the history and theory of art, photography and film to help contextualise and inform the development of the students work. They will be taken to London to visit major galleries and museums and offered a residential week in a recognised cultural centre. Previous trips have been made to New York, Rome, Morocco, Paris and Barcelona.

Students new to the subject course find that they quickly gain confidence and begin to use photography creatively. The more experienced photographers are offered a course structure that helps them to re-examine and refine their approach to photography and further develop their expressive and technical skills.

PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES:

Past students have been successful in gaining places on degree courses in photography and art, particularly in cross-over areas such as Graphic Design, Film, Games industry, Fashion and Editorial.

Piers Cunliffe has produced a new book - The Butterfly and The Birdcage - documenting the refurbishment of Bath’s historic Theatre Royal.

“I wanted to capture the progression of the emotional and physical transformation of a very much loved theatre," explains Piers. "I wanted to record, for posterity, not only the works but also the human element involved - from the deconstruction of the existing theatre to the pure joy of seeing it completed.”

The Butterfly and The Bird Cage was shot over six months and involved some 5,000 photographs. The book is now for sale via Piers’ website at a cost of £25 plus postage and packing. £5 from ever copy sold will be donated to the Theatre Royal Bath 2010 Refurbishment Appeal.

Piers developed his love of photography whilst in the sixth-form at King Edward’s School, Bath. His passion and skills were recognised and nurtured and subsequently he was the first student from the school to study for a degree in photography. Piers studied Documentary Photography at the University of Wales Newport and graduated with a BA(Hons). Since then, Piers has had much of his work published in Bath magazines, exhibited in Bath and London and has assisted photographers in London and abroad. (text website – www.creativeboom.co.uk)
