About the Junior School
|
King Edward’s Junior School is a selective, day, independent school for boys and girls at Key Stage 2 (ie 7 – 11).
The school moved to its present site in September 1990; it enjoys excellent purpose-built premises and benefits from shared facilities with the Senior School (Theatre, Sports Hall, Information Technology, playing fields, all weather pitch etc.) The Nursery and Pre-prep department is located across the city.
The school is self-sufficient both in terms of staff and facilities but profits from some periods being taught by staff from the Senior School, particularly Art and Physical Education.
Years 3 and 4 are taught predominantly by form teachers with specialists for French, PE, Information Technology and Music, while Years 5 and 6 are taught exclusively by subject specialists. In 2007, all of our Year 6 pupils were successful in passing the entrance examination to the Senior School.
The School prides itself on its atmosphere, and many visitors comment on its purposeful, friendly, confident, polite and enthusiastic pupils. The staff are highly professional in their approach, dedicated to the task of educating their charges and give freely of their time after school, at weekends and during the holidays.
The School enjoys considerable success on the sports field and is determined to provide as many youngsters as possible with opportunities to play representative sport and also to cater for those who enjoy sport purely as a recreational activity.
The extra-curricular programme offers a wide range of opportunities including fencing, golf, street dance, chess, stitchcraft and cookery amongst many others.
Music, art and drama feature strongly in both our curricular and extra-curricular programmes, with all Year 3 children learning to play recorder and all Year 4 children learning to play violin as part of their music class lessons. Over 100 youngsters either sing in our choir or play in our musical ensembles. In recent years the School has staged a number of productions including the musical ‘Shake, Ripple and Roll’ and 'Skool and Crossbones'.
After an excellent Inspection Report in October 2002, the school is not content to rest on its laurels and will continue to develop, providing an excellent education for the children.
