King Edward's Pre-Prep is situated to the west of Bath, close to rolling green fields and housed in a beautiful Victorian building.
On entering the school you will immediately be welcomed by the sense of warmth and care that is central to our school's philosophy. You will be met by happy and confident children who will enjoy sharing their experiences of their school with you.
As a staff, we nurture within every individual child, a joy for learning and independence that allows each one of them to reach their potential in all aspects of our broad, creative curriculum. We provide the children with opportunities to learn through first hand experiences, investigations and imaginative play.
As class sizes are small, each child's needs are rapidly identified and addressed. The children enjoy specialist music teaching, learn to swim and are offered a wide variety of after school activities including sports, languages and the arts to mention just a few.
We are very fortunate to enjoy the benefits of a carefully designed school grounds that incorporates facilities to meet the needs of the children's physical and social development along with opportunities for creative play and exploring the natural world with our gardens, pond area and potting shed.
For parents looking for a place at one of the best Bath primary schools and Somerset nursery, come and experience the magic of King Edward's Pre-Prep for yourself. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and prospective parents.

Congratulations to Mrs Mortimer, School Chef at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School, and her team who were presented with a 5 Star Food Hygiene Award by Bath and North East Somerset Council at an Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 29th February.
The 5 Star Award was presented by local celebrity chef, Mr Richard Bertinet, at a celebration evening in Bath’s Guildhall attended by Councillor Paul Crossley, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Andrew Foster from the Trading Standards Institute, David Gledhill, Chair of the local branch of the Federation of Small Businesses and many local businesses and catering establishments.
The Environmental Health Office makes spot checks on all local catering organisations including pubs, restaurants, care homes and schools. The high level of hygiene at King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery catering department was considered to be of such an excellent standard that the inspectors put them forward for the Award.
Head Teacher, Ms Jayne Gilbert, commented: “We have always known what a fantastic team Mrs Mortimer leads in our dining room. We all thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the wonderful food they provide on a daily basis for us. We were delighted and very proud that all their hard work was recognised by Bath and North East Somerset Council when they awarded King Edward’s Pre-Prep and Nursery School a 5 Star Food Hygiene Award.”

King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery School have embraced the Forest School philosophy to enrich the pupil’s learning experience. Head Teacher, Jayne Gilbert explains why learning outdoors can be so beneficial.
As Early Years’ Practitioners we are passionate about outdoor learning and the benefits it brings to children.
Research has shown the following:-
Active learning outdoors is essential for young children. The most rapid physical development takes place during the first seven years of life
Children need opportunities to explore and practise developing skills
Physical achievements enhance children’s self-esteem
Some learning can only happen outdoors
At King Edward’s Pre-Prep & Nursery we have a super outdoor environment which we use regularly and the opportunity to become a ‘Forest School’ and take groups of children to local forests on a weekly basis will optimise the teaching and learning opportunities that we can offer.
The concept of Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia where there is a strong belief that nature and movement are essential to a child’s development.
By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment each child has an opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, emotional and social skills.
Forest Schools have demonstrated success with children of all ages who visit the same local woodlands on a regular basis. Children learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.
We will give the children the freedom to explore the outdoors throughout the year, take risks and assess risks for themselves. Effective and exciting opportunities for the children will develop from the children’s interests within a framework of developing skills.
A wide range of activities will take place, for example, children can investigate trees, find out about the natural environment, play games, and make natural objects, such as whistles and panpipes. There could be a mini-beast hunt, or they could study wild flowers, or the effect of litter on wildlife in the woodland. The children will learn to cope with hazards, such as brambles, stinging nettles and overhead branches. They may be asked to help build bridges, dens or try mapping. All sessions will be designed around the needs of the group.
Many areas of our curriculum will be intrinsically covered within our Forest School.

The Pre-Prep and Bath Nursery is housed in a beautiful Victorian house close to Royal Victoria Park and the Botanical Gardens on Weston Lane, Bath.
The School comprises a well-equipped gymnasium and school hall with stage. There is a separate dining hall and kitchen where the Pre-Prep's own chef cooks meals from fresh ingredients, largely locally sourced produce, every day. Meal times are a very social occasion when children sit together with their teachers and are encouraged to develop good table manners. There is a choice of main courses, a vegetarian option and a well stocked salad bar alternative plus dessert, fruit or yoghurt. The lunches are so delicious it is not hard to encourage children to eat heartily.
The Pre-Prep has a specialist music room, ICT suite, art room and library. The nursery has separate rooms and access to its own playground and garden allowing the smallest children to play together in a perfect early years environment. Nursery children benefit from joining reception and Years 1 and 2 for many activities including assemblies, lunch and termly drama productions.
The Pre-Prep and Nursery is very lucky to be surrounded by spacious and safe grounds to the rear of the main house which gives the children the freedom to play and explore in a secure environment. The children have the opportunity to play traditional games on the surfaced playground, role play in the fort, explore the wooded area or enjoy the climbing frame.
There is a wilderness area and pond in the garden which is used by the children to investigate minibeasts and for other environmental projects, a magical sensory garden, a playing field for team games and an area where the children are cultivating their own gardens. Children love having the opportunity of being outside and many lessons utilise the grounds as an outdoor classroom.
The children have swimming lessons each week and have access to the excellent facilities of King Edward's Bathampton playing fields for sports activities. The newly installed science laboratories at King Edward's Junior School are used by the Pre-Prep children who take part in science workshops with the Junior School's specialist science teacher.
The Pre-Prep has its own Parent Representative Committee. Parents from each year group meet with the Head twice a term, providing an opportunity for parents to channel thoughts and ideas through to the Head and for the Head teacher to gain valuable feedback on new proposals and initiatives. The Parent Representatives also help with small scale fundraising activities and the organisation of Pre-Prep events.
