King Edward’s School is committed to supporting talented boys and girls, especially from the maintained sector, whose parents would otherwise be unable to fund the fees.

Scholarships and Special Talent Awards

There is no separate examination, Scholarships will be awarded at 11+ entry for academic excellence. Special Talent awards are for candidates who show outstanding talent in either art, drama, music or sport. A pupil with a Scholarship may also hold a Bursary Award, as these are income related.

Bursaries

Entry at Year 7

Entrance Bursaries: each year the School awards approximately 10 pupils Entrance Bursaries of amounts ranging between 10% and 100% of the annual fee, with any award assessed on the family’s individual financial circumstances and ability to pay. All pupils applying to join the School in Year 7 are eligible to apply.

Once awarded, unless parental circumstances change, Entrance Bursaries can normally continue through the child’s time at the School up to and including Year 13, subject to an annual review. Bursaries may be varied up or down if parents’ financial circumstances alter. The School endeavours to increase the award proportionately in line with year on year fee increases, although this is dependent on the School’s economic and financial circumstances and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Within the Entrance Bursary Awards up to 4 pupils are eligible for a special award of 50% of the annual fee, and these are awarded to the most able pupils coming from a State School into Year 7, whose families would not normally be able to afford a private education. These are also means-tested, in line with our charitable objects, and as with the Entrance Bursaries can continue through to Year 13. It is possible for this award to be supplemented by a normal Entrance Bursary to offer up to 100% assistance.

The Bursary Application Process

Parents wishing to apply for a bursary may indicate their interest on the application form. The necessary forms to apply for a bursary will then be sent out as requested. Please note that bursaries are financially means tested. Award Decisions

Bursary awards are made on the basis of an assessment of the family’s financial circumstances, including their savings, investments and realisable assets, as well as their income, major outgoings, the size of their family, any other persons dependent on them and other similar factors.

All assessments and awards are determined jointly by the Headmaster and Bursar, and decisions are communicated either prior to, or at the same time as, the offer of a place at the School. In the event of places/offers not being accepted the Bursary applications can be revisited to use the full budget and/or be used for late applicants.

Situations of temporary financial hardship

Many families can experience unexpected financial difficulties such as redundancy, bereavement, loss of a business, and the School will always do whatever we can to try to help. However, it is important that such issues are recognised and addressed earlier rather than later. We therefore urge parents to contact the Bursar or Headmaster as soon as there is a problem or potential difficulty with the payment of fees, so that we can work together on temporary, short-term or longer-term solutions that will work in the best interests of your child’s education. All situations will be dealt with sympathetically and in total confidence.

Sixth Form Open Evening Fri 24th Sept

Students considering sixth form are welcome to visit King Edward’s Sixth Form on Friday 24^th September between 6 – 8pm. The evening is designed to give pupils a chance to meet staff and existing sixth form pupils at KES, tour the school to view the different departments and see the facilities available as well as find out about life in King Edward’s Sixth Form.

During the evening Headmaster Mr Martin Boden will be giving a short welcome address followed by a student’s view given by members of the existing sixth form who will talk in more detail about the opportunities available at KES.

The Headmaster’s presentation will be at 6pm and then repeated again at 7.30pm.

King Edward’s has an excellent record of academic success and the quality of teaching is exceptional but it has other strengths too: it offers a varied and exciting extra-curricular programme where students can develop new skills or discover new interests. There are also opportunities for developing leadership, pupils in the sixth form play an extremely important part in the life of the School by being responsible for and supporting the younger pupils. The School is particularly noted for the warmth of the relationships between older and younger pupils. In addition, there are opportunities for making a contribution to the wider community by taking part in community service activities each week. The sixth form is designed to build confidence, develop life skills and equip students with the necessary academic qualifications to move forward with confidence.

Senior School Sixth Form, Year 12
A significant number of pupils join the School at Sixth Form level. Places for direct entry into Year 12 will be offered on the basis of a report from the pupil’s present school and a series of short interviews with the Headmaster, the Head of Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) or a Senior Tutor, and two or three Heads of Department. Applicants are expected to reach a target for entry consisting of grade ‘C’ or above in English Language and Maths at GCSE; ‘B’ grades or above (ideally 'A' or above) in the subjects chosen for AS level, or allied subjects, in the case of Economics and Business Studies, Theatre Studies and Sports Studies, and a minimum points score of 54 (taken from the best 9 subjects), with 8 points for an 'A*', 7 for an 'A', 6 for a 'B'and 5 for a 'C'. 'D' grades and below, and short courses, are not counted.

A* = 8 points, A = 7 points, B = 6 points, C = 5 points

Pupils are also expected to sign a Code of Conduct, copies of which are available in advance.

There are substantial Entrance Awards available for those who excel in their academic pursuits. These are awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster and are based on proven excellence in academic or other pursuits.

Financial assistance for parents

Bringing your daughter or son to King Edward’s School for their education is a decision that will benefit them hugely for their rest of their lives. However, it also represents a significant financial commitment on your part which should not be underestimated.

At King Edward’s School, we recognise this commitment and always aim to obtain the best possible value out of the fee income we receive in the provision of an all-round education for our pupils. As a Charity, the School is non-profit-making, and all surpluses are therefore reinvested in the premises, facilities and equipment needed to support that education in all its aspects.

Since its establishment in 1552 the School has a long and proud tradition of providing education for able pupils from less well-off families and a main purpose of the Charity is to provide financial support for parents towards the cost of fees through a programme of means-tested bursaries for entrants to King Edward’s Senior School.

Bursaries

Entry at Sixth Form

Sixth Form Bursaries: as well as the existing Entrance Bursaries that can continue into the Sixth Form, the equivalent of six further places is available for new entrants into the Sixth Form. These are also means-tested Bursaries and awards can range from 10-100% of the annual fee and, as with the Entrance Bursaries, will generally increase proportionately to the following year’s fee increase. Whilst these Bursaries are primarily aimed at external applicants from State Schools, consideration will also be given in exceptional circumstances to applications from existing pupils not currently in receipt of an Entrance Bursary.

Join TKTS in putting on Disney's High School Musical 2.
Learn the songs, dances and script during 5 days of workshops, and then perform the show to your family and friends. Gain experience working with a professional director, choreographer and musical director - and develop your skills whilst having a great time.

Workshops are open to both TKTS and non-TKTS students aged 6-18 years old. No experience or audition necessary - just lots of energy and enthusiasm!

Year 8 visit Techniquest, Cardiff

The Chemistry Department is taking the whole of Year 8 to visit Techniquest in Cardiff on Thursday 12^th November. During this week the centre is putting on a series of lectures and demonstrations entitled ‘The Magic of Chemistry.’

The event demonstrates work already covered from the Year 7 syllabus on changes of state. In addition, work to be covered in future Year 8 lessons will also be demonstrated, namely exothermic reactions and elements, mixtures and compounds. The event is geared towards Key Stage Three, that is Years 7 to 9, and is an ideal opportunity to see a series of demonstrations and lectures covering some of the Year 7 and 8 work.

Science Department - an introduction

Years 7 and 8
The sciences are taught in form groups as separate disciplines i.e Chemistry, Physics and Biology for one hour per week for each of the sciences in years 7 and 8 and one and a half hours per week in Year 9. Each science is taught by graduate specialists. A large emphasis is placed on practical work following the National Curriculum guidelines.

Years 10 and 11
Science is a core subject at King Edward's; all pupils study the three sciences up to age 16. Each of the three sciences is, again, taught by graduate specialists having two hours per week per subject. The majority of our pupils will take GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science where two separate grades will be awarded.

Our more able pupils will take the Triple Award i.e three separate GCSE grades. They are selected largely on the basis of their Year 8 and Year 9 results, together with a discussion with Year 9 subject teachers. This is still covered in the same time allocation as above. In this case, additional material has be to studied for each of the sciences leading to a separate GCSE grade in each of the sciences.

Six Chapel Row Gallery, Queen Square, Bath

Hope Stewart, Michael Pell and Darren Willison, practising artists and teachers of Art at King Edward’s School, Bath, are staging an exhibition entitled Places at Six Chapel Row Gallery between Saturday 24th July until Wednesday 28^th July, daily from 10am – 5pm.

The exhibition includes over fifty pieces of their collective art inspired by a common theme, the spirit of places they have visited.

Hope Stewart, Painter and Linocut Printmaker

Hope is a self-confessed nomad having lived in Scotland, France, Canada, Cyprus and Malawi. She trained in illustration and printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Canada. Now resident in Bath, she has taught art for ten years. The art of Hope Stewart is an energetic visual feast of iconic images and splashes of text that signpost her extensive world travels. This striking collection of work reminds us to celebrate the places we visit and where we live and offers a fresh perspective on some very familiar destinations. Hope’s skilful black and white linocuts are punctuated with injections of colour. The graphically intense prints with jaunty snippets of text are like loving postcards to friends and family.

Michael Pell, Painter Mixed Media

Michael has taken his inspiration from the urban landscape of cities. In particular Michael enjoys the texture, colour and spirit of different places; the accumulated layers of posters, stickers and graffiti in Renaissance Florence, the distressed plaster surfaces of Venice and the man-made marks in Berlin. Michael’s work is a montage of drawing and painting, photography and text, with items scavenged from the place which capture the essence and feel of the location, included in the piece.

Darren Willison, Painter

Darren’s work takes inspiration from the beautiful South Hams area of Devon. His paintings focus on the landscape and aim to capture the energy and vibrancy of the place. His work projects his personal connection with the landscape and has a sense of intimacy which draws the viewer in.

Physics Department

The aim of the department is to teach Physics in an enjoyable and stimulating way with the use of appropriate practical work to support theory and to produce good examination results.

The department has three well equipped labs, Q21- Q23, based around a central prep room.

A variety of teaching techniques are used to deliver the material including class experiments, teacher demonstrations, teacher explanations / discussions, the use of IT and the occasional video.

Recently the Physics department have run a trip for the sixth form to Geneva to visit CERN to explore the particle work of the A level course. This has proved an informative and enjoyable visit.

Year 7 to 8
Physics is taught in a single 1 hour lesson each week by a specialist physics teacher in a laboratory.

Measurement
Energy –types of energy, conservation of energy, renewable energy resources.
Static electricity –including use of the Van der Graff generator!
Electrical circuits –series and parallel circuits and applications to quiz board and theatre lighting.
The solar system and beyond

Year 8
Density –including sinking and floating.
Magnetism – Plotting magnetic fields, making and destroying magnets, strength of an electromagnet experiment
Light –light travels in straight lines (pinhole camera) , reflection, refraction, lenses, the eye. Colour.
Sound and waves– Sound as a vibration, speed of sound, longitudinal and transverse waves.

Year 9
Physics is taught in three one hour lessons over a two week period by a specialist in a Physics Laboratory.
Pressure –calculations and explanations of high pressure being useful etc, liquid pressure, atmospheric pressure including uses and problems.
Moments –Calculations including supported beams, centre of gravity, levers, stability.
Electronics –logic gates, SR bistable.
Light -Total internal reflection and uses.
Motion – Speed and distance-time graphs and simple calculations.
Energy –Conservation of energy, kinetic and potential equations.

Years 10 and 11
Physics is taught in 4 one hour lessons over a two week period either for a separate GCSE in Physics or GCSEs in Science and Additional Science.

Years 12 and 13
Students need good ability in both Maths and Physics and should have a minimum of GCSE grade B in both.

KES Cricket Week

KES played their annual cricket week in fantastic weather, recording 3 victories out of 4, only losing to the Old Edwardians.

The highlight of Cricket Week was a memorable 8 wicket victory against the MCC. A weakened KES bowling line up saw MCC score 300-4 at more than a run a ball, however, a school record unbeaten 238 run partnership won the match for KES.

The match winners were Captain Will Collier who scored his maiden century in all forms of cricket (104* off 89 balls) and Sam Mount who scored his third consecutive hundred (124* off 131 balls). Their match winning partnership came from only 214 balls.

There were also wins against Yarra Valley from Melbourne Australia, and the XL 40 Club. Yarra Valley scored 201 all out, with the wickets shared around but opening batsman Olly Metcalfe (83 not out) saw KES home by 5 wickets.

In a similar game, XL 40 Club scored 211 all out and again Metcalfe was the star scoring his maiden century sharing a partnership of 139 with Will Collier (68 not out) to win the match by 8 wickets. Metcalfe finished on 108 not out.

Cricket Week finishes off another successful season for KES senior cricket, unbeaten in T20 cricket in Bath for the third year running. Sam Mount scored 663 runs at an average of 74 and topped the bowling with 18 wickets at 19. Captain Will Collier finished off his school career scoring his 1000^th run for the first team.

Students battle through dreadful weather for Gold expedition in the Brecon Beacons

Whilst Bath and most of the country were basking in sunshine, 23 Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award students from KES were walking in wind and rain on the top of the Brecon Beacons.

They started at base camp in beautiful weather, but soon realised how quickly it can change when you climb up into the hills, which were shrouded in cloud. It was extremely wet and visibility very poor. The groups demonstrated some excellent navigation skills in these testing conditions, finding their way through the mist to their campsites. They walked for four days carrying all their kit, camping at farms overnight.

Mrs. Crouch and Mr. Chris Horobin, their Assessor, would like to say well done to all the participants who did exceptionally well in at times very difficult conditions, their team spirit and good humour were great.

England Hockey select KES student

King Edward’s School student Eugene Malthouse has been selected to represent the England U18 hockey squad.

Malthouse, who was captain of KES 1^st XI hockey team this season and a member of Bath Buccs 1^st Xi National League side, will join the England squad on Wednesday to play a three test match series in Germany this weekend. On returning from Germany the KES superstar is then scheduled to travel to Ireland to play in the Home Nations Tournament later this month.

Malthouse, who will earn his 1^st international cap this weekend, will also play a key role in England’s short corner attack as their number one drag flick specialist.

Louisa Gwilliam, Director of Sport at King Edward’s School, commented that “Eugene Malthouse is first KES student to play hockey for England and his selection is just reward for all of his hard work and effort over recent years. He is a credit to the school and we wish him every success this summer.”

The Building of Bath Collection is a fascinating gem of a museum containing a unique collection which interprets the rich architectural history of Bath and the men who transformed a provincial town into the world famous Georgion Spa. Children at the King Edward’s Junior School enjoyed a visit during their humanities project on Bath earlier this year. It is definitely a place you want to go back to and find out more.

Entering King Edward's Sixth Form is an important time for all pupils. King Edward's School offers excellent academic success, a broad range of extra curricular activities and a supportive and caring teaching staff who help and encourage pupils towards achieving their future goals.

One of the strengths of King Edward's Sixth Form is its excellent track record of academic success. The quality of teaching is exceptional and is designed to enable all pupils to discover their strengths and make the most of their talents.

King Edward's School recognises that pupils need advice and guidance with their university applications. There is a pro-active programme of careers counselling, external conferences, speakers from business and an extensive careers and higher education library to help students make informed choices about their future direction.

There are opportunities for making a contribution to the wider community also by taking part in community service activities each week. Many pupils visit hospitals, care homes and charities in and around Bath, as well as being enjoyable pupils find it develops their self-confidence and they make great friendships too.
