Sporting Opportunities for All

King Edward's seeks to provide a broad, well-balanced curricular and extra-curricular programme for Sport. All pupils are encouraged to experience and enjoy a wide range of activities, nurturing them to reach their maximum potential.

Throughout their time at King Edward's we promote positive attitudes towards physical activity, laying the foundations for all pupils to be able to follow active and healthy lifestyles in the wider community.

The PE and Games programme is designed to be fully inclusive. We want to provide opportunities for participation by pupils of all levels of age and ability, involving either competition within the School or with other schools. Pupils are offered a wide range of sports during PE and Games lessons, with more choice being available as pupils progress through the school.

Throughout their time at School we promote positive attitudes towards physical activity, laying the foundations for all pupils to be able to follow active and healthy lifestyles in the wider community.

Inter-form sport is operated by the PE dept allowing participation in a variety of competitive team activities for boys and girls. Team selection is guided by form tutors.

Selection for school teams follows on from participation in Games, extra-curricular time and inter-form sport for all boys and girls. In Year 7 on entry and Year 8, all pupils follow the main sport of that term. In the first year all pupils work together for the initial weeks, then the boys are arranged in groups based entirely on ability.

The nature of independent education these days makes school very competitive in all aspects of their curriculum and sport is no exception to this. At King Edward’s School we take pride in our pupils performing at the very highest levels in competitive sport and their sporting commitments in School provide the foundation for representing their County or on occasions at National level. There must therefore, be room to celebrate and promote excellence. To achieve this we play many of the best schools in the South West. The school has enjoyed success in national competitions and gained representative honours in many sports.

Our philosophy is that ‘Sport for All’ and Excellence can co-exist together successfully. They are not mutually exclusive.

The PE Programme

Year 7 and 8 pupils receive one lesson of Physical Education a week. All pupils are taught a variety of activities. These include:

. Invasion games – Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse

. Net games – Short tennis, Badminton & Tennis

. Aesthetic & Conditioning activities – Dance, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Athletics and Health Related Fitness

. Outdoor Education – Orienteering and Team building

The emphasis throughout all of these activities is on developing motor co-

ordination, social skills, such as teamwork, and fitness for a healthy lifestyle.

The programme varies in content as pupils move through the school.

The Games Programme

All pupils in years 7 & 8 take part in the major team sports of the term. This

gives pupils a good understanding of the skills, techniques and tactics involved

in each sport.

Autumn Term:

Rugby for the boys

Hockey for the girls

Spring Term:

Hockey for the boys

Netball for the girls

Summer Term:

Cricket for the boys

Tennis and Rounders for the girls

Each group is taught by a fully qualified Physical Education teacher with support

staff. Representative teams are selected at A,B and occasionally C team

standard.

It is seen as a Privilege to represent King Edward’s in a sports team and the

School has an expectation that pupils fulfil that commitment.

Sports Tours

We aim to offer the opportunity for pupils to take part in long weekend and

extended tours both within the UK and also around the world.

Clubs and activities - Autumn Term Programme now available

Every term there are an extensive range of clubs and activities available for children at the Pre-Prep both at lunchtime and after school.

Activities are available in sport, the creative arts, music, foreign languages and dance. Each term there are a number of new activities available, as well as old favourites, to encourage the children to try something different and provide opportunities for them to develop new skills.

Clubs range from animation, ICT, construction, environment club, judo, dance, speech and drama, football, chess, cricket, hockey, netball and physical educational games skills. For a full and update list please refer to the Pre-Prep Activities Programme printed at the back of the termly calendar.

In the recent inspection report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate the Pre-Prep was complimented on the extra curricular activities it provides, "Extra-curricular activities give excellent support to the taught curriculum."

Kenya Trip July 2012

Dr Fewell has confirmed that the Kenya 2012 trip is now finalised. The group will be leaving King Edward’s School on Thursday 5^th July, flying from Heathrow and returning to King Edward’s School on Thurs 26^th July 2012.

Activities Week Trips 2012

Monday 2 July – Friday 6^th July 2012

Skern Lodge Trip for Year 4 & Year 6
The School is organising a visit to the Skern Lodge Activity Centre for Year 4 & Year 6 pupils during Activities Week 2012. This trip involves a wide range of exciting experiences from climbing, abseiling, archery and completing an assault course to the water-based canoeing, raft building and surfing. All the activities take place within the grounds of the centre and the local environs of Bideford.

French Trip for Year 5
In Year 5 pupils all have the opportunity to go on an educational trip to France during Activities Week. This is a very popular trip and very beneficial for the children as it provides an opportunity to try out their French in a meaningful context. The children are encouraged to use their French by shopping, visiting cafes and interacting with local French people and staff at the centre.

The visit includes trips to Dinard, Dinan and St Malo as well as a trip to a large, modern aquarium, shoreline study and a typical French market.

The Geography Department - an introduction

The Geography Department is passionate about the teaching of the subject at King Edward's School. We maintain a fundamental interest in Geography itself and strive to develop both as teachers and as Geographers.

We believe that this passion makes a real difference in the way we teach the subject. We look to discuss different ideas and introduce innovative thinking into lesson planning wherever possible. We are very aware of the need to vary our teaching according to the strengths of different pupils and take great pleasure in the success of the complete range of abilities. We look to keep abreast of exam changes and progressive thinking and incorporate this knowledge into lessons.

We see the subject as an essential part of a well-rounded education, providing key knowledge, skills and understanding for an active part in modern society. We aim to provide a broad Geographical knowledge in Years 7, 8 and 9 so that pupils are aware of their local area and the wider world about them. They have an understanding of the inter-relationships that influence the world and have an appreciation and understanding of different landscapes. We look to play a major role in the delivery of Sustainable Development and give a strong focus to cultural, moral and spiritual aspects of the curriculum.

The Department looks to inspire the pupils to continue the subject at GCSE and beyond and takes particular pleasure in the high number of pupils opting to study Geography at University. We are active members of the Local Geographical Association. The inspirational role of field work is crucial and we aim to take the pupils out of the classroom both on an individual basis and as year groups as often as practically possible. As well as developing an understanding and appreciation of different landscapes this ensures a thorough preparation for their own coursework and provides a wide range of experiences.

In summary, we strive to make King Edward's an exciting, enjoyable and stimulating place in which to teach and learn Geography.

French Trip to Paris 18 – 22 April 2012

The French Department is pleased to offer a linguistic and cultural trip to Paris during the start of the Easter Holidays.

The aim of the trip is to give pupils studying French in Years 7 & 8 some experience of French culture and the opportunity to use their French in an authentic setting. It will also enable them to sample some of the huge variety of cultural activities that Paris has to offer.

Activities planned include:

A visit to the Eiffel Tower
A visit to Montmartre
A boat trip down the River Seine
Visits to the Louvre and the Pompidou Centre
A day trip to Disneyland Paris

History and Politics Department - an introduction

The History and Politics department enjoys an enviable reputation for academic success and is well respected for the scholarship, enthusiasm and commitment of its teaching staff.

We are keen to encourage all students at King Edward's by developing their knowledge and historical skills. We make use of a variety of teaching methods, whilst still pursuing academic achievement for all. Enjoyment of the subject is a key aim. Students are encouraged to explore and discuss their own ideas and our teaching styles reflect this, where interactivity is key.

History is a very popular subject at King Edward's, as indicated by the number of students continuing with the subject, which is only compulsory until the end of Year 9. A large percentage of students opt for the GCSE Modern World course and many go on to study at A Level and beyond.

There are three extra-curricular clubs too. History club for KS3 pupils seeks to develop knowledge in a practical and fun way. MUN (Model United Nations) caters for Year 11, 12 and 13 pupils keen to debate international issues. There is also a Think Tank – a forum for Years 11 and 12 to debate a wide range of historical, political and philosophical issues to develop their understanding in seminar sessions.

KES Short Story Competition 2012 - entries by Fri 30 March

Submissions are invited for the 2012 KES Short Story Competition which will be judged this year by novelist and tutor on the MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, Julia Green.

There are two age groups: Years 7 – 9 and Years 10 – 13. Staff entries also welcome.

Word Limit: Stories should be no longer than 1,500 words

Theme: Light and Dark. Entrants can interpret this as loosely as they like!

Deadline for entries: Friday 30^th March

Entries to be handed to: Mrs Bruton or any member of the English Department

This is a wonderful musical evening. The Prom Concert is a big performance of all the various ensembles that take place in the Junior School and is an annual celebration of all things musical in the Junior school.

This year there will be well over 120 junior school children taking part in the concert and all the ensembles that rehearse on a weekly basis will be taking part. These include:-

Swing Band
String Ensemble
Orchestra
Percussion ensemble
Steel Pan Ensemble
Chamber choir
Lower School Choir

To add some glamour to the evening the dress code for the children will be posh frocks and bow ties, the KEJS version of a Last night at the Proms

Year 4 Bird Walk Wed 28 March

Pupils at King Edward’s Junior School will be grabbing their binoculars and finding out more about the birdlife near their school by going on a bird walk around the school grounds.

The RSPB in particular are always interested to hear from people about the birds they spot.

Here is an extract from the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch website about what they do with the data;

“What do we do with your results?

You may think that if you only saw a few birds during your Birdwatch, or were unlucky and saw none at all, that we won't want to hear from you.

This isn't true - we want to hear from you no matter what you saw.

This is because we put together all the data we receive to create an overview of what birds are making the most of school grounds across the UK.

If one school reports seeing fewer birds than last year, this could just be due to local factors, such as the weather, or a new building on site, keeping the birds away. But if lots of surveys come back saying that they saw fewer of a specific bird, alarm bells would start to ring with our scientists. We would need to start trying to work out what was happening, and what people could do to help.”

Year 4 production of Tempest Wed 21 March

Year 4 will be studying Shakespeare’s The Tempest during the Spring Term.

Year 4 will be taking part in an exciting new development to the curriculum this year. The abridged play has been split into ten sections, and they will be performing the whole play in the Wroughton Theatre on Wednesday 21^st March at 7pm. The play will probably last about 40 minutes, after which there will be a screening of a filmed modern interpretation of the story which Year 4 will also be producing this term.

The performance will be unlike any play you have ever seen before with the entire cast changing every four minutes!

Pupils will gain the experience of acting in a professional space in addition to a richer understanding of The Tempest.

The topic for this year’s Art Week is ‘Art in Our Environment’. A visiting artist will work with all the children in the school. Indoor and outdoor art activities will take place.
