Academic life at King Edward's School

As one of the finest independent private schools in Bath, King Edward’s School is delighted to have been judged to be 'outstanding' in a recent Independent School Inspectorate report. This success has been achieved through the very highest standards in teaching and helping our students to realise their full potential.

We encourage pupils to fully contribute to school life and to enjoy its many opportunities. There are excellent relationships and a real sense of partnership in learning between staff and students.

The School provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for children from a variety of backgrounds, in which each individual is encouraged to strive for excellence and to acquire a lifelong passion for knowledge, discovery and adventure. There is a broad and dynamic curriculum and a host of extra-curricular activities to interest and enrich the lives of all pupils. This is underpinned by ‘outstanding’ pastoral care.

Pupils achieve outstanding success in many areas. The strength of music in the school is reflected in the excellent levels of public performances, the considerable success in examinations and the regularity with which pupils gather honours at regional music festivals. The School has an outstanding dramatic tradition, with two or more major productions a year, an Art Department which is a centre of excellence and a tradition of sporting success, with many pupils representing their sport at both regional and national levels.

The facilities are excellent, with a state-of-the-art academic centre for science, geography, modern foreign languages and IT, a stylish sixth form learning and social centre, a new Science laboratory at the Junior School and a Learning Discovery IT Suite and sensory garden at the Pre-Prep.

King Edward’s is committed to ensuring that all children with academic potential have the opportunity to become part of the school. There are bursaries available as well as scholarships and special talent awards in art, drama, music and sport for pupils.

What makes the School so special is passionate teaching, pupils who are motivated learners with a determination to achieve their goals and pursue their interests.

Outstanding inspection for King Edward’s School, Bath

Staff, pupils and parents were delighted to receive the news that King Edward’s School has been judged as ‘outstanding’ in a recent inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

At the Senior School the inspectors focused on eight distinct ‘aspects’ of the work of the School. The inspectors’ final judgements in each case are highlighted below:

Aspect

Judgement

The Educational Experience Provided

“King Edward’s School creates an outstanding range of educational opportunities, suited to the interests, aptitudes and needs of its pupils.”

Pupils’ Learning and Achievements

“Pupils are very well educated and reach outstanding levels of achievement.”

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development of Pupils

“The development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness is outstanding.”

The Quality of Teaching and Assessment

“The quality of teaching is good with many outstanding features.”

The Quality of Pastoral Care and the Welfare, Health and Safety of Pupils

“The quality of pastoral care, support and guidance is outstanding, and the provision is well supported by an effective management structure.”

The Quality of Links with Parents and the Community

“The school has established an outstanding and effective partnership with parents and worthwhile links with the community which benefit pupils.”

The Quality of Governance

“The quality of governance is good.”

The Quality of Leadership and Management

“The quality of leadership and management of the headmaster and the senior management team and others with delegated responsibilities is outstanding.”

Headmaster of King Edward’s School, Mr Boden, commented: “I am so thrilled that the School has emerged with such distinction and with what will most likely be one of the most successful ISI reports published anywhere in the country this year.  Inspectors comment frequently and most positively on the expertise and commitment of both teaching and support staff, on the warmth and friendliness of relationships at all levels within the School community, on the outstanding levels of achievement and success in all areas and also on the happy, welcoming and caring atmosphere which is a hallmark of the School.  In all aspects, the School has either matched or significantly improved upon the very high levels noted in the last inspection of 2002.  For that, I am most grateful for the support and commitment of both current and former colleagues, pupils, parents, governors and benefactors, all of whom can be proud of the contribution they have made, and continue to make, to the work of an ‘outstanding’ school.”

The inspection reported that King Edward’s is “outstandingly successful in meeting its aims” and “is now superbly suited to the demands of education in a modern setting.”

King Edward’s School is one of the country’s finest independent co-educational day schools providing an ‘outstanding’ education for children aged from three to eighteen.

Developing International Links with China

Group shot of Mr Horrocks-Taylor with Chinese students, now at KES, and their parents.
King Edward’s was delighted to welcome its first three overseas Chinese students into the Sixth Form in the Autumn Term 2010 as part of a developing and strengthening educational and cultural link with China.

The Headmaster visited Suzhou in October 2009 and first met the three academically gifted Chinese students from ‘Suzhou High School of Jiangsu Province – SIP’, who are now staying with three King Edward’s families and coming to terms with the cultural differences of living and studying in England.

The Second Master, Michael Horrocks-Taylor, then joined a British Council sponsored visit to Suzhou New District in April, spending several fascinating days at primary, middle and secondary schools, meeting pupils and teachers, and signing friendship agreements on behalf of King Edward’s with two schools. He also met the KES-bound students and their parents as part of an information gathering and giving exercise in support of their induction into the School. Suzhou is a fast-growing and modern Chinese city with over six million inhabitants, situated three hours drive from Shanghai. It is also a well-known tourist destination within China with visitors attracted mainly to its formal gardens and the historic canals, which are a popular location for weddings.

As a result of this visit, King Edward’s has become a founder member of the Bath Suzhou Educational Partnership (BSEP), joining forces with three state Primary and four Secondary schools from Bath and North East Somerset. The aim of BSEP is to promote educational collaboration and to enhance international understanding amongst students and staff of the partnership schools by means of developing educational and cultural links between schools in Bath and Suzhou.

This process of collaboration has started in earnest with the BSEP schools having already hosted two Chinese teachers for eight weeks during the Autumn Term. A return visit is planned in 2011 for four teachers from Bath, including King Edward’s Head of History and Politics Ms Rebecca Davies, to Suzhou in April. King Edward’s is also hosting 15 students from the independent Suzhou Foreign Language School in February, all of whom are staying with KES families and staff. A delegation of Head Teachers and representatives from the Suzhou New District Education Authority is due to visit Bath in July, and there is a proposed trip to Suzhou for a small group of pupils from the BSEP schools in October.

The introduction of Mandarin this year as a lunchtime and after-school club across the whole school has been another valuable addition to this developing and exciting cultural link.

King Edward's pupils celebrate 100% pass rate at A Level

IMG_0144_300_pixels_1.jpg
Year 13 pupils at King Edward’s have today been celebrating a 100% pass rate in their A Levels this year.

An outstanding 24% of all entries achieved the coveted top grade, better even than last year’s impressive performance. Over 40% of pupils achieved at least one A*. 6 pupils achieved 4 A*s or better, with one pupil even managing an astonishing 6 A* grades! 80% of their entries were graded at B or better, with 56% at A or A*.

The vast majority of pupils have again gained entry into their first choice university, a notable achievement in this most competitive of years ahead of the new tuition fees arrangement from 2012.

Martin Boden, Headmaster, commented:
“These impressive successes are testament to the hard work of pupils and colleagues over many years, and the joyous response of pupils discovering just how well they had done was thoroughly merited. Congratulations are due all round, accompanied, of course, with best wishes for the future.”

Year 12 pupils also performed very well in their AS exams, with nearly half of all grades being A and over 70% A or B. They are also to be congratulated on these results, which certainly bode well for next year.
