UNIFORM REGULATIONS

Dress and Appearance

All pupils are expected to maintain a high standard of personal appearance. The overall principles are formality, tidiness, smartness and lack of ostentation. These principles, and the detailed rules which derive from them, apply when pupils are on the School premises, travelling to and from School, attending examinations or representing the School in any way. Pupils are expected to take pride in their appearance and to be mindful at all times and in all places that their appearance and conduct contribute to the public perception of the School. The School expects that every member of the community will cheerfully conform to these expectations.

GENERAL RULES (ALL PUPILS)

General Rules (All Pupils)

CCF Uniform  (Y9-13)

May be worn on Wednesdays by CCF members, according to instructions (full uniform or CCF sweater, shirt and tie). Individual items of uniform must not be worn at other times.

Coats

Should be smart, long enough to cover a pupil’s School blazer and be of a tasteful and sober single colour, e.g. a smart anorak or overcoat in black, brown or blue. They should not be adorned with large badges or unsuitable slogans. Army camouflage jackets may only be worn as part of the CCF Uniform.

Hair Cosmetics

Hair is to be clean, tidy and of a natural colour. Extreme styles are not permitted. Make-up or nail varnish is not permitted except for Sixth Form girls, where its use should be discreet and unobtrusive.

Boys: Hair is to be off-the-collar and must not appear excessively razored (level 2 is the absolute minimum and may be unacceptable in some cases), and should not hang over the eyes when wet and combed forward. Facial hair (stubble, beards, moustaches, excessively long sideburns) is not usually permitted.

Girls: For health and safety reasons, girls with long hair are likely to be required to tie it back in some lessons.

Hats

May not be worn with School uniform

Sixth Form

The School allows senior pupils a more personal choice and, as a result, uniform rules are sometimes applied with more discretion. However, the privileged position of the Sixth Form as role models for the rest of the School means that they have a duty always to take pride in their appearance. If pupils or parents are in any doubt about the acceptability to the School of any item of clothing or any style of dress, they should consult their Head of Sector or the Deputy Head (Pastoral) before any purchase is made. The School’s judgement in such matters is final and it is hoped that parents will support the School fully in ensuring pupils adhere to these rules. It should be borne in mind that the overall impression created by pupils’ uniform is often as important as the precise detail.

Summer Uniform

During a spell of warm weather, pupils may be permitted to wear summer uniform, removing blazer or suit jacket and (in the case of boys) tie during the School day.

Girls in Years 7-11 may wear short-sleeved white Trutex or fitted blouses in the summer. Boys may wear short-sleeved white shirts.

At all times, undergarments should not protrude from beneath the uniform. Pupils should also avoid wearing T-shirts adorned with writing, logos, etc. or brightly coloured underwear which are visible under shirts or blouses.

Mufti Dress Guidelines

Pupils have a responsibility to ensure that mufti clothing can never be perceived as being offensive, indecent or impracticable for the School site or lessons. They should remain mindful of the length of skirts or shorts, and of the nature of slogans or other symbols on clothing.
