Reception Reception

Reception

The Reception classroom is situated in a large room with two teaching areas and ample space for play and learning.  There is easy access to the beautiful school grounds which incorporate a bike track, climbing area, summer house, storytelling area, mud kitchen, sensory area and water play.  Children in Reception continue to work within the EYFS framework but increasing emphasis is place on the teaching of numeracy and literacy skills as well as further development in creative subjects with specialist teachers.

A love of reading and writing is developed in Reception where children enjoy daily literacy activities including regular individual reading time with Reception staff. There are weekly visits to our well stocked library, and our librarian shares favourite stories and helps children choose books to borrow. Every child is encouraged and supported in their literacy development through a progressive synthetic phonics approach incorporating a strong story-based foundation.

We place great emphasis on the development of mathematics with a very practical approach using games to develop strong foundations in the basic skills. This is a vital step in developing the knowledge and understanding for problem solving, reasoning and numeracy. Mathematical skills are practised both indoors and outdoors, and incorporated into other areas of the curriculum.

A wide range of playground equipment encourages children to develop their physical skills as well as providing lots of fun. Two PE lessons with a specialist games teacher, a regular visit to Forest School and swimming each week provide plenty of exercise for young children.

Creativity at King Edward’s is positively encouraged through Dance, Music, DT and Art, with visits from teachers who specialise in these subjects. Outings are hugely popular with our Reception children. Highlights during the year include a trip to the theatre before Christmas, a visit to the Farm in the Spring, an ‘Animal Encounter’ here at school and a surprise adventure in the Summer term!  Within the school day we also offer a variety of extra-curricular activities including tennis, ball skills and piano.

Children have plenty of opportunities for developing their own interests and are encouraged to share news from home using our Interactive Learning Diary. Parents also keep up to date with their child’s learning using this web-based resource which shows photos, videos and comments about aspects of their child’s day at school.

joining reception

Please contact our experienced Admissions team, who will be happy to discuss your child's specific needs and to arrange a tour with our Head Teacher, Ms Jayne Gilbert, to see for yourself what makes King Edward's Pre-Prep so special.

Children joining Reception are informally evaluated in small groups during stay and play sessions. Experienced staff support the children as they play, reading stories, using the construction equipment and even holding tea parties!

All children joining Reception, including children moving from the Nursery, undertake an informal evaluation before a place is offered. This takes the form of age-appropriate activities to assess gross, fine motor skills and other basic abilities.

Please contact our experienced Admissions team, who will be happy to discuss your child's specific needs and to arrange an after school tour with our Head Teacher, Ms Jayne Gilbert, to see for yourself what makes King Edward's Pre-Prep so special.
