jUNIOR sCHOOL TEAM HEAD TO GOOGLE HQ FOR THE FINAL OF THE PA RASPBERRY PI COMPETITION

Just before half term a Junior School team took part in the final of the Pa Raspberry Pi Competition taking place at Google HQ in London. It was the fourth year in a row that a team from KES has qualified for the final (winning it twice) in a competition that aims to inspire young coders to find solutions to real world problems.

Designed to encourage an interest in STEM, the PA Raspberry Pi Competition asks teams to use their engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer to come up with solutions to global challenges. This year’s finalist projects from pupils responded to the theme of building a positive human future, be it in health, sustainable transport, keeping communities safe, prioritising planet-positive products or powering the future.

Representing KES, the Carbon Raspberries were among the finalists selected from over 300 schools in the UK. Arriving at Google HQ in the morning, the team were met by the totally inspiring, CBBC presenter, Fran Scott, known for programmes including Absolute Genius and How to be Epic at Everything. They then had to present their idea for minimising carbon footprints in schools to a panel of judges drawn from Google Cloud, the Bank of England, and AstraZeneca, among others.

Impressing the judges with their presentation skills, concept and design, the team were later delighted to learn that they had been awarded the Ingenuity Award for Innovation.
