A new zero waste tuck shop opens at kes

A new Senior School zero waste tuck shop opened this week and quickly attracted a loyal band of customers.

Green prefects and members of the staff/pupil Sustainability Committee, Romilly, Bonnie and Katie, report on how it came to be.

"This summer term has seen the introduction of a new zero waste tuck shop, stocked full of tasty, sustainably sourced snacks available for pupils to purchase during break times. The Environmental Action Group (EAG) have worked hard to come up with this idea that brings their mission statement to life; providing healthy, affordable snacks to pupils while promoting sustainability and zero waste.

"Simply bring in your own tub and treat yourself to a scoop of a snack of your choice, ranging from salted pretzels to chocolate covered raisins. A huge thanks to the EAG, Mrs Simonds and Mrs Champniss in supporting and facilitating this wonderful effort towards making our school a greener place."

Here at KES our Sustainability Strategy embraces six key areas of school life including the energy we consume, the food we eat, our waste management policies, how we tend and preserve our biodiversity/grounds, our approach to transport and the embedding of sustainability in our curriculum.

Recent initiatives at school include:

  •  40% of energy at our North Road campus provided by solar panels
  •  A new zero waste tuck shop, launching next week, developed by pupils in the Environmental Action Group.
  • A Smarter Travel Week taking place just before half term
  • A new net zero carbon in use Academic and Pastoral Building opening in the Autumn
