spotlight n the sixth form pathways programme at kes bath

KES Bath’s Sixth Form Pathways Programme is a distinctive framework designed to support academic excellence, independent thinking and future readiness beyond A Levels. Built around five interconnected strands, the programme enriches pupils’ intellectual experience while helping them prepare confidently for university and life beyond school.

We recently caught up with the current Year 12 cohort to find out how they are engaging with the programme. Across different subject areas, pupils are stepping well beyond their timetabled studies, developing the curiosity, independence and ambition that underpin long‑term academic success.

Developing Independent Thinkers Beyond A Levels

At the heart of the programme is Holistic Intelligence Development, encouraging pupils to explore learning in a broader intellectual and cultural context. We have been thrilled to see so many pupils stepping beyond the confines of their timetables to pursue wider intellectural interests.  A number of puils have been attending lectures and seminars at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution or entering national essay competitions, experiences that are already helping them to grow in confidence, curiosity and independence.

There has also been strong engagement with opportunities that foster Creative and Independent Thinking. Pupils applying for humanities or law have embraced activities such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), national debating competitions including Philosothon, or participation in the Bath Student Parliament. Through these experiences, pupils are developing articulate, reflective academic voices.

Academic Enrichment and Deep Subject Exploration

Our scientists have similarly embraced deeper exploration beyond the A Level syllabus. The Principia physics discussion group has been particularly well attended, with pupils debating topics such as special relativity, thermodynamics and rotational dynamics. These discussions go well beyond examination content and encourage pupils to think critically, question assumptions and engage with complex ideas.

Under the strand of Future Ready Competencies, pupils are strengthening the transferable skills valued by both universities and employers. Participation has been particularly strong in Model United Nations, economics challenges and the Isaac Science programme, where pupils have attended the post‑16 Nuclear Physics Masterclass and a Cambridge Taster Day focused on advanced electricity concepts, all of which help develop independence, resilience and critical thinking.

Preparing Pupils for University and Life Beyond KES

Pupils are also engaging enthusiastically with Deep Academic Exploration. Several are preparing for the British Physics Olympiad, while others are applying for the XMaS Scientist Experience in Grenoble or the Senior Physics Challenge Summer School at Cambridge. Interest in initiatives such as Girls into Electronics, FutureLearn courses and Open University modules further reflects a Sixth Form keen to explore learning at undergraduate level.

Approaches such as the Sixth Form Pathways Programme underpin KES Bath’s wider reputation for academic quality and breadth, qualities recognised in The Sunday Times Parent Power guide, which has consistently highlighted the strength of the School’s academic culture and forward‑looking education.

The final strand of the programme, Pathway Preparation, supports pupils as they plan their next steps beyond KES. Some are applying for travel awards or undertaking MOOCs in areas such as linguistics or Korean language study, while others are preparing for university entrance assessments such as the ESAT or exploring summer placements at major science facilities run by organisations including the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Extended Project Qualification and Independent Research

Interest in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) has been particularly strong this year. Pupils have selected an impressive and diverse range of topics, many extending well beyond their A Level subjects, and are producing academic reports, films, artworks and digital projects of remarkable originality.

These projects are already helping pupils articulate their academic interests and shape future applications. As the University of Cambridge notes, the EPQ develops the independent research and analytical skills that are essential for success in higher education.

We are extremely proud of the maturity, ambition and enthusiasm our Sixth Formers are showing as they engage with the Sixth Form Pathways Programme. Their commitment to academic depth, independent learning and future readiness reflects the broader educational ethos of King Edward’s School, Bath, and we remain grateful for the continued support from families as pupils embrace these wide‑ranging opportunities.
