King Edward's SChool, Bath announces new name for pre-prep and junior school

New Name Signals Exciting New Chapter for Primary Education at KES Bath.

King Edward's School, Bath has announced that its combined Pre-Prep and Junior School will become King Edward's Prep School, Bath from January 2027, as pupils aged 3-11 come together on the North Road campus.

The new name reflects the creation of a single school community and comes at an exciting time for primary education at KES, with significant investment in enhanced grounds and facilities.

The announcement follows a period of consultation and conversations with staff and pupils and reflects the shared future being created as the Pre-Prep and Junior School come together on one site for the first time in the School’s history.

The move forms part of King Edward School’s wider £3 million investment in its primary provision, which will create enhanced facilities including a new dedicated Early Years environment, improved STEM and dining facilities, transformed outdoor education spaces, new performance, rehearsal and teaching spaces for Music and a welcoming new reception area. These developments will help to create an exceptional learning environment for primary-aged children and are designed to support a seamless educational journey from Early Years through to Year 6.

The announcement of the new name also coincides with the first phase of a significant redevelopment of the outdoor learning environment, with purpose-designed spaces for Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils due to open in early 2027. Inspired by Bath's landscape and shaped by ideas developed by KES teachers and leaders, the new outdoor environments have been designed to encourage curiosity, imagination, exploration and child-led discovery.
Whilst the name is new, it has strong roots in the history of King Edward’s.  The Junior School was originally known as the Preparatory School, making the new name a natural evolution as the two schools come together under one identity.

Martin Boden, Headmaster of King Edward's School, said:

"The creation of King Edward's Prep School, Bath marks a significant and exciting moment in the evolution of our School.
“Bringing our Pre-Prep and Junior School together on one site is about much more than new facilities. It is about creating a single community where children can enjoy a seamless educational journey from the earliest years through to the end of Year 6, supported by exceptional teaching, specialist opportunities and outstanding pastoral care.

“The name King Edward's Prep School, Bath reflects that vision. It is a name that feels both familiar and forward-looking, and one that has been warmly embraced by staff and pupils. As we prepare to welcome our youngest children to North Road, it signals the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for primary education at KES."

Sean Price, Head of King Edward's Prep School, Bath added:

"This is a genuinely exciting moment for our pupils, staff and families.

“King Edward's Prep School, Bath brings together the very best of our Pre-Prep and Junior School traditions within a single, united community.

“Most importantly, while our name is changing, the things that families value most will remain the same: inspiring teaching, a strong sense of community, high expectations, and an environment in which children are encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning. This may be a new name, but it carries the same ethos, ambition and pursuit of excellence that families already know and value at KES.”
