A spectacular term of music at kes

Since the October half term, King Edward’s has been alive with music, creativity and inspirational events. From recitals to large-scale concerts, shows and community performances, our pupils have embraced every opportunity to shine. Their artistry, energy, and commitment have made this a truly memorable term.

We reached a thrilling crescendo with our school musical, Into the Woods – a production that wove together the intricacies of music theatre, operetta, avant garde effects, classical orchestration, folk music and jazz in Stephen Sondheim’s hugely challenging but wonderfully magical score. Pupils and staff worked tirelessly to perfect every note and lyric and their vibrant singing and choreography thrilled and captivated audiences with a performance that seamlessly and confidently flowed throughout the weighty themes, but also uplifting humour of it all.

The half term opened with a dazzling showcase of musical theatre, led by KES singing teachers, Mrs Sharp and Mrs Brooke. Pupils delivered vibrant performances and honed their stagecraft in expert-led workshops. KES musicians also played a profound role in Remembrance commemorations: Eddie (Year 11) performed the Last Post at Bath Abbey with moving sensitivity, Lewis performed from the RAF, Penny (Year 9) featured on BBC Points West after playing at Combe Down’s service, and Laura (Year 11) sounded the Bugle at our School Remembrance Assembly. Their poise and professionalism were exemplary.

November’s Autumn Colours Concert was a kaleidoscope of sound – dazzling piano, expressive violin, stunning vocals, and even original songs. From jazz and pop to classical and opera, the evening was a testament to the breadth of talent at KES. Five of our top percussionists enjoyed an electrifying masterclass with Jeremy Little, tackling works by Keiko Abe and the iconic Caravan. Jeremy’s insight and artistry left an indelible mark on all who attended, and we even had a full orchestral marimba to enjoy!

Twelve GCSE and A-level pupils experienced world-class music up close at Wiltshire Music Centre, hearing Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony – a current set work – performed entirely from memory. Inspiring and exhilarating for our pupils who also enjoyed connecting with the professionals with some impressively well-informed questions. Festive cheer then filled the air at the KES Christmas Fair as the Wind Ensemble sparkled in the Café, KES Steel brought warmth to the terrace with Feliz Navidad, and our Junior School choir sang beautifully, a perfect start to the season.

Pupils witnessed virtuoso violinist and social media sensation Esther Abrami rehearse Ina Boyle’s Violin Concerto and her own composition with Bath Philharmonia and met super-talented and friendly guest conductor Rebecca Miller – an unforgettable moment for our young musicians. Our Brass Ensemble visited KES Pre-Prep and the RUH, raising £150 for RUHX. Together with our partners, Art at the Heart, we have raised over £500 this year. Music can make a real difference!

Lastly, one of the most anticipated highlights of our musical year, the KES Carol Service at Bath Abbey. This magical evening featured stirring and harmonically challenging arrangements of both congregational and choral settings of carols. These included works by Eric Whitacre, Brendon Ashe, John Rutter and Benjamin Britten, as well as Adoration, a stunning new work by our in-house composer Mark David Boden.
