Ovid, or Publius Ovidius Naso, was a Roman poet who flourished during the reign of the first emperor Augustus and who wrote such masterpieces as the Metamorphoses, an epic poem centred around the themes of change and mutability, and the Ars Amatoria, a poem that professes to teach the art of loving. His popularity, subversiveness and sudden expulsion to the shores of the Black Sea in unclear circumstances have captured the imagination of artists and thinkers for millennia. In this episode, Mr Burns and Mr Feeney strive to understand the man, the poet and his enduring legacy on European culture and society.
