Year 8 Careers Day explores the legal world
Year 8 pupils stepped off timetable on Friday to take part in an engaging Careers Day, themed around ‘Crime and Punishment’. The event offered a fascinating insight into the legal profession.
The day began with a series of mock trials, supported by Year 12 students interested in studying law. Working in teams, Year 8 pupils learned about the distinctions between Crown Courts and Magistrates’ Courts, as well as the roles of legal institutions and the professionals who operate within them. They then analysed a fictional case and took on roles as either the prosecution or the defence in a mock courtroom trial.
In the afternoon, we were delighted to welcome a panel of guest speakers, including magistrate, Martin Grixoni (also an OE), Sonal Khimji, a solicitor specialising in data protection law and employment law, Anna Maxwell, a disputes lawyer, and Louise Evans, solicitor volunteer at Bath Law Clinic. Each guest took our young audience through their varied experience and expertise and outlined their routes to their current roles. They also recapped what they had studied at school and at university, relevant skills for working in the legal profession, and provided lots of advice on gaining relevant work experience.
The Student Careers Programme at KES is designed to provide pupils with a broad and inspiring range of insights into a variety of career sectors. From Year 7 onwards, we aim to make explicit the connection between the soft and hard skills developed in school and the demands of the modern workplace.
The programme is supported by a range of workshops and guest speakers. As pupils progress through the School, they benefit from opportunities such as our biennial Careers Convention for Years 10–13 and the Work Experience Programme undertaken by Year 12 during Activities Week.
