The Joy of making art - teaching an appreciation of the creative process
The teaching of art at KES is built on the belief that the joy of making art lies in the process itself. Pupils are encouraged to explore materials, test ideas and take creative risks without feeling pressured to produce a perfect outcome. This emphasis on process helps them discover the satisfaction that comes from focused making and the freedom to experiment. Whether drawing, painting, sculpting or taking photos, pupils experience the pleasure of being absorbed in their work, following their curiosity and developing personal ways of expressing their ideas.
The Art and Photography Department provides a calm, welcoming environment where pupils are encouraged to work independently and embrace their passions and interests. Classrooms are intentionally relaxing and organised to help pupils focus, experiment and develop their ideas with confidence. At lunchtime the department becomes a lively and purposeful space, with pupils choosing to continue their projects, explore new techniques and refine their skills. This busy atmosphere reflects their enthusiasm for the subject and their desire to extend their learning beyond lesson time.
A key aim of the department is to nurture pupils’ appreciation of art by introducing them to a range of materials, processes and artistic traditions. Through studying the work of others and engaging in their own practice, pupils gain a deeper understanding of visual language and the value of the creative process. Making art provides a sense of joy, discovery and momentum as ideas take shape. The act of creating is often absorbing and mindful, giving pupils space to slow down and think differently. Moments spent fully engaged and being “in the flow” help pupils experience concentration, intrinsic motivation and the quiet satisfaction of seeing an idea emerge.
Regular visits to galleries and museums also support pupils’ learning and help build a love of art. Trips to Oxford, Sixth Form residencies abroad and partnerships with local galleries all help to broaden cultural horizons and expose pupils to a range of artwork, artefacts and enriching experiences. We are thrilled to have built strong connections with the Holburne Museum and regularly take pupils to see their exciting and eclectic shows, meet curators and access their learning space. As teachers we are always looking for opportunities to inform and inspire pupils and realise the significance of seeing great works of art first-hand.
Celebrating pupils’ creative achievements is important and throughout the year we provide opportunities to exhibit and showcase work. From the collection of writing and images in the Anthology to the Bath Schools Exhibition at Burdall’s Yard and the End of Year Show at KES it is always exciting and rewarding for pupils’ artwork to be seen and enjoyed by a wider audience.
The department places strong emphasis on the transferable skills developed through artistic practice, such as problem solving, creative thinking and critical reflection. These experiences build confidence, resilience and independence, supporting pupils in all areas of their learning. Teachers in the department are practising artists who enjoy seeing, discussing and making art. Their expertise and love of the subject help foster a positive culture in which pupils feel supported, inspired and motivated. Ultimately, we want to share and celebrate the joy and fulfilment of the creative process.
